When the primary is over, what happens to the "extra" money? |
|
If a candidate raises $10 million, but only spends $9 million, can that money be used for the GE? If not, where does it go?
Someone asked me about this earlier and I wasn't sure what the answer was. :-)

1. I'm pretty sure any cash left over from a primary can be rolled |

14. I thought they could do that, but I wasn't sure. |
|
It would make sense. After all, the money was donated to the candidate for the election. The GE is simply the final stage of that election.

3. That's not an issue for Hillary. |
|
Nor is it an issue for McCain.
However, look at the candidates with populist followings who stayed briefly and then dashed away. That makes for an excellent question.

RUMMYisFROSTED answered my question. :-)
When I was asked, I had to admit that I didn't have a clue. Then I said, "DUers will know ... I'll get back to you later."

4. Clinton, Obama and McSame can move it to their Senate finances. |
|
Or donate it to other candidates. Or send it back.
They can't pocket it.

I knew they couldn't pocket it, but I wasn't sure if it went to the Democratic party. I didn't think they would ever send it back - no politician has ever given money back unless they were forced to for legal and/or political reasons!

Retiring Clinton's debt is about the last priority.

19. Also, the perception of him "buying" her support |
|
wouldn't do either of them any favors.

17. The money from a primary can go to the GE, however |
|
if they lose the primary they can keep the money for their next campaign.
It shows up in the financial reports as money available going forward.
