June 29 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush's approval rating remained near a low for his term in a New York Times/CBS News poll that also showed him in a statistical tie with Democratic challenger John Kerry.
Forty-two percent of 1,053 adults surveyed June 23-27 approved of Bush's job performance, almost even with 41 percent in a May survey by CBS alone and down from 46 percent when the New York Times and CBS last polled together in April.
Kerry, a four-term U.S. senator from Massachusetts, received the support of 45 percent of the 875 registered voters in the survey, compared with 44 percent for Bush, within the 3 percentage point margin of error. Kerry had an 8 percentage point lead in last month's CBS poll and was statistically tied with 46 percent to Bush's 44 percent in the joint April survey.
``This is an atypical election, with the president's approval ratings being affected very uniquely by current events,'' said Robert Blendon, executive director of Harvard University's Opinion Research Program. Approval of Bush is tied to the war in Iraq, fears of more terrorism and the public's assessment of the U.S. economy, he said.
