To break a log jam in the event no candidate went into the convention with a majority of delegates.
That happened in 1968 and again in 1972. So the Super-Ds were created. Had Hillary, Edwards and Obama split the vote so none had a majority, the Super-Ds would probably have rallied behind Hillary as soon as the last primary was over.
But that did not happen. Edwards support fell to the wayside prompting him to drop out. So Obama will win end up winning more than half the delegates available to be won. All the Super-Ds have to do then is confirm the winner.
Which is exactly what they will do. But I agree with them right now. They should wait til after the primaries.
