Obama Praises McCain
 I thought he's been saying they were the same.

READING, Pa. - Democrat Barack Obama, who often argues that John McCain is the same as President Bush, said Sunday that the Republican presidential candidate would be an improvement over Bush's eight-year reign.

"You have a real choice in this election. Either Democrat would be better than John McCain. And all three of us would be better than George Bush," Obama said.

The Illinois senator was trying to argue that he is the stronger choice over Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in Tuesday's primary in Pennsylvania. But Obama ended up mixing in praise for McCain at the same time — and giving Clinton an opening to criticize.

"We need a nominee who will take on John McCain, not cheer on John McCain," the New York senator said in Johnstown. She said the Arizona senator would follow "the same failed policies that have been so wrong for our country the last seven years."

But his a backhanded compliment threatened to undercut his own efforts — and those of the entire Democratic Party — to portray the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting as nothing more than an extension of Bush's unpopular tenure. At the very least, the remark provided fodder that Republicans can use in the general election to try to prop up McCain.

1. That's faint praise indeed. So faint it isn't even praise. NT

11. That is so rich coming from you
Nowhere in that quote did I see Obama endorsing McCain. He basically said that anyone would be better than Bush.

However, I do tend to recall Hillary making overtly positive comments about McCain awhile back. Not simply saying that he was better than Bush, but actually promoting him OVER Obama.

Depending on your preference. Not all that difficult to understand. I'm surprised so many Hillary supporters are having trouble understanding this concept.

5. It's hardly like when she said McCain was more experienced and would make a better POTUS...
...than Obama. But, she is a Clinton, so she'll get a pass of certain things.

9. I think your point is more academic than practical
I don't think it's necessarily a compliment/praise to say that someone is better than Bush.

13. what a crock.
of course McCain would be an improvement. But to claim that this is praise, I really think the author should get out more often. Like into the real world. Too many programming sessions with Team Hillary! tend to corrode the synapses and cause the loss of rational thinking.

A trained monkey would be better than Bush, and it wouldn't even need to be trained all that well.

If I posted a thread with that title, would

a.) all the Clinton supporters stop by and thank me for the praise

or

b.) it be locked with extreme prejudice

?

21. They are evidently not familiar with the expression: "damned with faint praise."
Ha. Went to google the exact definition of the idiom and tripped across this:

21 April 2008
Damned with faint praise
Barack Obama has boldly come out with the assertion that John McCain would make a better president than Captain Codpiece. Phillies fans everywhere will understand that this is like describing a baseball player as being a better hitter than Bobby Wine.
