Clinton on An Iran Attack: 'Obliterate Them'

Clinton further displayed tough talk in an interview airing on Good Morning America Tuesday, ABC News' Chris Cuomo asked Clinton what she would do if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons.

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president we will attack Iran," Clinton said. "In the next ten years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

Bomb, bomb, bomb
Bomb, Bomb Iran!

Good evening, Mrs. McClinton. Nice to see you have finally decided to dispense with that constrictive 'Democrat' Disguise.

of unity, change , and all that happy horse shit you did not lie. But you did not tell the truth either.

Clinton further displayed tough talk in an interview airing on "Good Morning America" Tuesday. < HERE IS THE CONTEXT OF YOUR HALF TRUTH>

:::::::::::ABC News' Chris Cuomo asked Clinton what she would do if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons.::::::::::::::

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran," Clinton said. "In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

So keep spewing that unity, change and the rest of that happy horse shit. You make your candidate proud i am sure.

116. In the OP, you will find a bunch of letters and numbers that look different from the others.
They will be underlined, in a blue font, and start with "http".

If you position your mouse over that section of your screen, your pointer will change. Likely into a pointing finger (unless you have modified your original default settings).

With your left finger, while hovering over that blue, underlined section with the mouse in "finger pointing" position, please click the LEFT mouse button (unless you have modified this from your original default settings, then please click the button you normally use when following links).

This will open up a whole new intertube where you can read the story in full.

No need to thank me. I am a giver.

157. I'm going to reiterate what I just said in another thread. Progressives, take heed.
The MoveOn fiasco shows how little the neo-liberal princess thinks of the progressive Democratic base. We must not make the mistake of defending a potential Clinton candidacy. As soon as she makes a move to go to war with Iran, we must be prepared to wage war against her at all cost.

Remember what we did to Johnson in the 60's. He was a Democrat. So is she. Neither were progressive.

Do not contribute to her. Do not campaign for her. Vote for her, if she manages to swipe the nomination, and that's it.

And the first time she rattles the proverbial saber (or Sabot), drop your shit, pick up a placard, and march.

193. Well, given the damage that would be done to the Democratic Party ...
... if she were to be the one launching the attack against Iran, or, like Nixon, campaigning to get out of the war but escalating instead, I'm not sure that voting for Hillary in the GE would be the best long-term move for the party, or the country.

Fortunately, I'm hopeful that we won't be faced with that choice. I still believe the Democratic superdelegates aren't so ignorant as to throw away the party's future, and will line-up behind Obama -- but are just waiting for the pledged delegate outcome to become final. Obama will be the nominee, and Hillary will change her tune on Obama in the same way the Right Wing has flipped on a McCain nomination.

Even in context, it's a very aggressive statement. She sounds like Bush. Her response makes it appear that she's speaking not to the future, but to the present. She didn't say "I would want..." :

91. huh? WTF? cupcake? Israel has far more nukes than Iran as Iran has none.
Israel is a grown up country and can take of itself. It has fought many wars to preserve itself in the past and have shown themselves to be very good fighters. I would put my money on Israel on a fight with Iran especially since Israel has the nukes.

Nuclear weapons:
Israel > 0
Iran = 0

PS thanks for the condescending attitude, cupcake

zero second-strike capability? Why would they have a nuclear arsenal with no deterrent capability? Is it too much work for them to build deep bunkers or for them to keep a few warheads on nuclear submarines?

Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 06:30 AM by leveymg
And, plenty of strategic ballistic missiles and fighter-bomber "bunker-buster" tactical nukes for a first-strike.

More than enough nuclear warheads of all types to "annihilate" Iran and half the world, when and if the Israelis choose.

The Israeli military neither needs, nor particularly want, a nuclear alliance with the U.S.

57. Do you remember when MAD didn't mean Mothers Against Drunk Driving?
When it meant "Mutually Assured Destruction" instead? Do you remember the concept of deterrance? Have you ever bluffed in Poker?

You can't bluff in poker if your opponent doesn't have any reason to believe that you are able to play a winning hand if pushed to do so.

NOW is not the time to talk about consulting Congress. Virtually everyone in America agrees that it would be best if no nation attacked any other nation with Nukes. If Iran attacked Israel with nukes Congress would scramble without any puahing from the President. NOW is the time to play the deterrance hand, it costs nothing to bluff. NOW is the time to give Iran or anyone else every reason to think it would be a very bad idea to use nuclear weapons against Israel or anyone else, and the threat of retaliation is part of what makes using nukes a very bad idea.

Then Israel could retaliate, using the nuclear warheads which they ILLEGALLY have, and the US could stay the fuck out of it.

But since Iran has no nukes, and Hillary will never be president. it's a moot point.

Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 06:24 PM by Occam Bandage
in an unprovoked attack as France is. They sought nuclear weapons (and have since put that program on hold) to use as a deterrent against conventional attack. They are expansionist, but they prefer to use foreign militias (such as the Badr Brigade in Iraq and Hezbollah in Syria/Lebanon/Palestine) and economic/political pressure to do their work.

His response therefore would be the same as mine: to roll out of bed and wake up, because if Iran is attacking Israel, you're having a dream.

106. Let's take a step back, away from the Bush/Clinton/McCain Iran insanity.
"A few weeks after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, a strange document arrived in Washington. It came as a fax, on plain paper, from the Swiss ambassador in Tehran.

The fax laid out the terms for a "grand bargain" -- in essence a peace treaty between the U.S. and Iran. It put everything on the table: Iran's support for terrorism, its nuclear program, even its hostility towards Israel. In exchange, Iran asked Washington for security guarantees, an end to sanctions and a promise never to push for regime change.

Iran's reformists were again trying to reach out to Washington, as they had after 9/11. The fax never received a reply."

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/showdown/themes/grandbargain.html

Iran has no nukes and was willing to enter into a grand bargain with the US.
Bush ignored them.
Based on Clinton's insane comments today, she would ignore them too.

to a tee, no matter how justified their actions/inactions may be. Of course, Israel would never provoke nor pre-emptively attack another and it seems we can depend on Hillary to be totally supportive of Israel, no matter how infamous their actions/agenda might be. How peachy keen: how special. Some of us remember the USS Liberty, Hil. :D

I don't even hear Bush talking about totally obliterating countries. Now she proclaims that she will attack and obliterate Iran. What a warmongering WITCH!! She is just itching to drop a nuke on someone.

She also never read the intelligence report which said Iran was not developing a nuke.

She also wants to INCREASE our involvement in the Middle East by creating a Middle Eastern NATO.

America sticking it's nose in the Middle East for decades led to 9/11. Now she wants increased involvement and she is threatening countries there with nuclear annihilation.

104. Nope- despite the hyperbole, their positions are similar (if not damn near identical)
"Obama earlier pledged to Jewish voters here that he would do his utmost to help Israel fend off any regional threat, as he criticized ex-president Jimmy Carter for seeking to meet with Hamas leaders.

At the debate, he said: "An (Iranian) attack on Israel is an attack on our strongest ally in the region, one whose security we consider paramount.

"That would be an act of aggression that I would consider unacceptable and the United States would take appropriate action."

Clinton, whose New York senate seat represents a high proportion of Jewish voters, was more categorical.

"And we will let the Iranians know that, yes, an attack on Israel would trigger massive retaliation," she said.

yet the concepts still apply- and Obama being essentially my age (we got our undergrad degrees the same year) he knows the rhetoric well.

As to point #2, given his major and specialization at Columbia, he's probably studied game theory angles with respect to strategic deterrence, and understands that "nuclear chicken" (used loosely- and as opposed to "brinksmanship") is part and parcel to the larger picture.

That assumption, btw, is to his credit.

It was a stupid question, and her hawkish posturing was even stupider. ABC wanted to know what it would take to get her to commit us to war, and they found out--never mind the inherent complexities of the million-and-one variations on the situation they postulated.

Here's a lesson for Obama: when the MSM is salivating for war, don't give it to 'em.

146. There are so many things wrong with this
1) IRAN does not have nuclear weapons and according to the NIE it has suspended its program

2) Even if it has recently restarted the program it is at least 5 and probably 10 years away from the solving the technical hurdles

3) Israel is a relatively minuscule state which means any strike against it would result in fallout throughout the region.

4) The hypothetical is a overt neocon talking point that sets the stage for a more bellicose posture vis a vis Iran

5) It causes further (unnecessary) anxiety to the already extremely vulnerable Israeli citizenry.

212. I'm no Hillary fan, but this would be the position of any American president
Do you really think anyone not named Pat Buchanan would let Iran attack Israel with nuclear weapons and not respond?

Iran has to know that any nuclear attack on any country is an act of suicide. Period. End of discussion.

217. Translation: I want the Richard Mellon Scaife wing of my party to vote for me on Tuesday.
And to donate lots more money. I could use the cash.

Man, I'm seriously afraid to wonder what she could have promised to this uber rich winger in return for his "endorsement".
