Gov. Rendell Abandons Clinton for Obama at 11th Hour


In an unprecedented and startling move late today, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, long a stalwart Clinton backer in the Keystone State, announced to members of the local Pittsburgh press his decision to switch his support from Sen. Clinton to Sen. Obama for the Pennsylvania Primary, which is a mere handful of hours away.

"I've just had enough of being tarnished with a corporate fat-cat image," Rendell said, his well-known voice filling the room as reporters hastily scribbled down his remarks. His staff had contacted no media and his comments were off-the-cuff and unscripted, a rarity for Rendell.

"Early on, I figured, what the hell, she's the big name in the race, the star on the marquee, the ticket to a Cabinet slot. Who wouldn't want to ride a showhorse in the big parade?"

Rendell seemed flush with relief as he spoke to reporters, but was peppered with questions about how Senator Clinton responded to his decision, coming as it does at such a critical moment in the nomination race.

"She doesn't know I've made it," Rendell offered. "You folks are the first to know. I imagine some goddam blog or other will have this up on computer screens within the hour."

Asked why he had not announced the decision to Senator Clinton himself, Rendell explained that it was a question of connection. "Look, I called her on the cell phone enroute to the Obama rally here tonight in Pittsburgh, just wanted to talk, you know, but her staff told me she was out duck-hunting and didn't want to be bothered. So I said, 'Well, fuck it, then, I'm endorsing Obama.'"
