Voters Obama Can Do Without
Here are some of Hillary's most wanted. She can have them.

"I don't care too much for Obama," Maria Norgren, the daughter and granddaughter of steelworkers, said in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle shopping center here, near the Obama rally.

"I don't even think he's American," added her husband, Edward, who lost his job when the steel mills closed and now mans the counter at the Puff Discount Tobacco and Lottery shop next to the Giant Eagle.

"His father's from Nigeria, right?" asked Maria, wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers T-shirt.

"I think he just wants to be president because he's black," said Tim Hetrick, smoking a cigarette as he waited for a bus among the crumbling structures of downtown McKeesport. A Democrat, he's thinking about voting for McCain in November.

The discontent is common among the valley's hard-luck residents. Outside the Penn State campus hosting the Obama event, Jim Obley, who lost his job at a mental-health center, set up a folding chair so he could wave Hillary Clinton signs at the Obama supporters. "He said most Pennsylvanians are bitter and they need religion and guns," protested Obley, wearing a necklace with a gold cross. "We're not about that."

Should the person that typed that be banned from voting?

8. Please, tell me how you'd test people for racism before disenfranchising them.
I'm more of an MLK follower. I think racists should be taught with "the weapon of love" to respect their fellow man rather than deprived of rights for their ignorance.

is a racist nowadays. Or at least some people try that line of thinking. I agree with you on love being the only right answer though. Gandhi also taught the same concept and made major changes as well. Dr. King was great too. It's the only way we are ever going to make this world a better place. Love is stronger than all the hate in the world.

25. I wouldn't go that far
We should just keep two separate tabulations: one with the racists, and one without. Then we give them to the media to run with a rampant racism in America storyline for a few weeks, make everyone vote again and see if they can be shamed into being rational.

10. I was born in McKeesport, PA
It was once a booming city due to the steel industry. I remember seeing the orange glow at night from the blast furnaces of National Tube from the front porch of my grandmother's house. My grandmother worked at the Christy Park Mill during World War II making bomb casings. McKeesport once had a thriving business district. My great grandparents owned a bakery there. My great-great grandfather sang in productions put on by the local opera company.

Today, McKeesport has half the population as it did in its prime. The once thriving business district is little more than decaying boarded-up storefronts. Almost everyone who could, has left town. I can't stand to even drive through McKeesport, because it breaks my heart.

The last of the good union jobs left in 1987 when National Tube shut its doors for good. All that is left is a historical marker.

The economic boom of the 1990's didn't reach McKeesport. I doubt the people of McKeesport have any confidence that government can do anything to improve their lives. They have been waiting for more than 20 years.

19. My neighbors really shocked the hell out of me last night.
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 10:30 AM by EnviroBat
I've been going through a rough time in my life recently, and my next-door neighbors are two of the sweetest, kindest, generous people I've ever had the good fortune to live next to. The problem? They are Republicans. Last night they invited me over for dinner, and a discussion ensued regarding their son, who lives next door to them. He is leaving for Iraq next month. "I'm really hoping that either Hillary or Obama will end this senseless war", I said. Mind you, these neighbors have seen my Obama sign in the front yard many times now. "Well I hope your not voting for that Obama"! was their reply. "You know he's a Muslim don't you?" "He was educated in a Muslim school"! The lady went on to tell me that she seriously believes the Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ! I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Her reasoning is that, according to the scriptures, the anti-Christ will present himself in the form of a charismatic leader of men... So, why wasn't Gandhi the anti-Christ? Why wasn't Reagan, or Kennedy? How about Martin Luther King? Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people? Some are beyond help. For Christs sake! Their son is leaving for this fucking endless war next month, and they still can't see for the republican blinders they've got strapped on.

God help us all.

I wonder how some of them would react if they found out McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone.

I think Milbank is going a bit overboard with the snark and stereotypes in this column. (Nothing new.)

These people who say they'd vote for Clinton and then McCain have no clue about McCain. McCain has this loving aura from the media which has rubbed off on people over the years. It is going to be hard to battle that in the GE, no matter who is our nominee.

30. The people of McKeesport were not helped by Bill Clinton
The National Tubes Works, the largest employer in McKeesport shut its doors for good in 1987. Since then, it has been all downhill for the city of McKeesport. Businesses started closing on a large scale in the 1980's and by the mid 1990's McKeesport had lost about half of its population. The Clinton boom years did not reach the people of McKeeport.

obama needs these cretins, too. but he won't get them, because there's no way to open their minds. they don't read, they don't watch the news, they are averse to thought & reason.

therefore mccain must be thoroughly slimed with the "adulterer" tag. its true, and it sticks. i'm already working on my reagan democrat parents with it. and i'll be throwing in "presenile dementia" any place i can.
