What really grinds my gears about Tehran-gate: Why did Clinton lie about Iran?
http://www.youtube.com/v/WbZ7qMGyEtI&hl

"Well what we were talking about was the potential for a nuclear attack by Iran, if Iran does achieve what appears to be it's continuing goal of obtaining nuclear weapons, and I think deterrence has not been effectively used in recent times, we used it very well during the Cold War when we had a bipolar world, and what I think the president should do and what our policy should be is to make it very clear to the Iranians that they would be risking massive retaliation were they to launch a nuclear attack on Israel. In addition, if Iran were to become a nuclear power, it could set off an arms race that would be incredibly dangerous and destabilizing because the countries in the region are not going to want Iran to be the only nuclear power. So I can imagine that they would be rushing to obtain nuclear weapons themselves. In order to forestall that, creating some kind of a security agreement where we said, 'No, you do not need to acquire nuclear weapons if you were the subject of an unprovoked nuclear attack by Iran the United States and hopefully our NATO allies would respond to that as well.' It is a theory that some people have been looking at because there is a fear that if Iran, which I hope we can prevent, becoming a nuclear power, but if they were to become one, some people worry that they are not deterrable, that they somehow have a different mindset and a worldview that might very well lead the leadership to be willing to become martyrs. I don't buy that, but I think we have to test it. And one of the ways of testing it is to make it very clear that we are not going to permit them, if we can prevent it, from becoming a nuclear power, but were they to become so, their use of nuclear weapons against Israel would provoke a nuclear response from the United States, which personally I believe would prevent it from happening, and that we would try to help the other countries that might be intimidated and bullied into submission by Iran because they were a nuclear power, avoid that fate by creating this new security umbrella."

Uh, first off, sweetie, Iran is not the only nation in the region with nuclear arms: Israel has them, although they refuse to confirm that. So does India and Pakistan.

Now, I understand that Crazy Cat Lady wants to undercut her own chances by making McCain's "100 years" gaffe pale in comparison. But really - is there any need to posit the absurdity that Iran is the only nation in the region with nuclear power?

2. actually, Iran does NOT have nuclear weapons.
at least at the moment. Of course, if a country like the USA, with a history of preemptive regime change invasions against countries that did nothing to them, starts spouting how they're going to "obliterate" my nation of 71 million people, you can bet your sweet ass that even if I never intended to get nuclear weapons, I sure as hell will NOW.

6. Pakistan SHARES A FUCKING BORDER with Iran.
Furthermore, Russia's pledged to retaliate against a nuclear strike against Iran. That's the key to our current geopolitical strategy in the Middle East, and that's what we don't want.

10. What a great way to be utterly pedantic, and to contribute absolutely fucking nothing to the thread.
If you know they share a border, you know it's a pretty bad fucking idea to startle the nation right next to Iran that has nukes. And why? Because they're right next to India - their traditional enemy, which also has nukes.

14. deterrence is a good policy that has served us well in the past... it is currently working for
india and pakistan...

what it does is lessen the threat of a mideast nuclear arms race.

Yeah. Because threatening a weaponless nation
sandwiched next to two warring nations that have them and would like nothing better than to blow one another to all Hell makes for excellent foreign policy.

Neocon apologizers. Dis-fucking-gusting.

13. I lived in Tehran from 1976-1979 and escaped with one suitcase across the Pakistani border
with my mom and sister, my dad joined us 2 weeks later. If you dont believe me, that is fine. It makes no difference to me what you think actually.

Regardless, my point holds true. they are considered 2 different political regions. thanks.

9. Israel has the nukes and Iran is not even close to getting them (as per the NIE).
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 04:13 PM by futureliveshere
If you just connect the borders there are too many to connect. India & Pak are a different region called the Indian sub-continent or part of South - Asia. Israel and Iran are in the Middle - East.

But this is not the main point and I agree that it should be pointed out that Israel has the nukes and Iran is not even close to getting them (as per the NIE).

edited to change the title.

20. For all of you posting about nuclear weapons, who has them and
who doesn't, back up a few decades. The only sane thing to do is, DESTROY ALL NUCLEAR WEAPONS, no country should have them, they are not weapons to be used, this is the message, this is OUR planet. No country has the right to use them. So stop all the small talk and get your head together.
