Clinton tells Democrats: Don't vote for McCain
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 06:37 AM by Forkboy
Wise words from the Senator.

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) – Hillary Clinton pleaded for partisan unity on Thursday, urging Democrats not to abandon their party to vote for John McCain if their preferred candidate fails to secure the nomination.

Clinton was asked by a questioner in the audience here what she would tell frustrated Democrats who might consider voting for McCain in the general election out of spite.

“Please think through this decision,” Clinton said, laughing and emphasizing the word “please.”
--
Clinton stressed that there are “significant” differences between her and Obama, but said “those differences pale to the differences between us and Sen. McCain.”

“I intend to do everything I can to make sure we have a unified Democratic party,” she said. “When this contest is over and we have a nominee, we’re going to close ranks, we’re going to be united.”

Inspired by the thread by someone claiming they'll vote for McCain over Obama. Even Hillary thinks these people are stupid. And that goes for any Obama supporters thinking the same thing. Don't be idiots, for all our sakes.

1. What about those voters who will simply not vote rather than cast a vote for Bush3?

3. I have mixed feelings on that.
I'm one who probably won't vote for Hillary, but I do have conditions. I live in Mass and if the race is close here I'll bite the bullet and vote for her. It shouldn't be close regardless of which Dem wins, but if it is I won't let my decision hurt the rest of you.

I do understand that some people feel they can't vote for someone in good conscience, but I also think if they live in areas where it's close they need to think long and hard about that decision, and how their conscience will feel when McCain attacks Iran, overturns Roe v Wade, etc.

6. I was thrilled when I saw the clip yesterday.
I hope supporters on both sides take the time to realize what a colossal mistake it would be to vote McCain.

8. Oh please...excuse me if I find this less than sincere
That one passage doesn't make up for the multiple times she has elevated McCain's C-in-C qualifications over Obama's and implied he is not ready to handle a crisis. When she made those remarks, which came after she had started to take some heat for the "Obama has a speech he gave in 2002" comment, it struck me as little more than window dressing for the superdelegates in case they ever complain she's not a team player.

9. I Actually Believe Her
I think a lot of her elevating McCain and bashing Obama was desperation causing her to talk smack.

Or, maybe she realizes that if Obama is the nominee her best bets really are if she maintains her standing as a loyal Democrat. After all, if McCain wins and she is "blamed" Democrats are unlikely to rally to her in 2012. If she helps Obama, she can still angle for some sort of lofty position.

Alternatively, she may actually believe she still has a shot at the nomination and wants people to vote for her over McCain.

10. Wise.
I must admit, I'm really not happy with her tactics in this primary and the recent Iran talk REALLY rubbed me the wrong way, to put it mildly, but this was the right thing for her to say. I hope her supporters listen to those words and take them to heart. Personally, I think no matter what happens, I will be obligated to vote Democratic... even if only for the sake of the Supreme Court.

11. Too late. She's already convinced her low information voters to go McCain if she loses.
