The Dems better find their own ad to refute this or Obama will lose NC.

1. one thing that worries me
Doesn't NC have a "closed primary", but same day registrations for people who want to switch from Republican to Democrat?

2. The ad isn't going to be run. The RNC denounced it and McCain denounced it as well.

3. McCain says he objects

McCain Campaign Statement

John McCain strongly rejects this ad and the type of politics that degrades our civics. From the beginning of this process McCain has expressed his intent to run a respectful campaign based on the issues, and we have repeatedly called for all parties to follow his lead.

10. That was my point. I don't think it matters much that McCain rejected
these tactics. I heard about this ad on Thom Hartmann's show, and it's still up on that web site. There's NOTHING to stop some fringe group from running stuff lik this and worse.

I realize a lot of DUers disagree with me, but I think we should fight this kind of crap with like-kind ads. Some ideas like:

McCain divorced his broke wife and married Cindy, the multimillion dollar heris, 6 WEEKS after his divorce. What happened to family values?

Where are McCain's medical records? Could he be suffering from PTSD as a result of his capture and torture in 'Nam?

Senator McCain, what's your explaination for getting into a physical scuffle with Senator Grassley? Is that kind lf lack of self-control what we want in the WH?

I realize that's sleazy politics, but they're all valid questions about things that REALLY happened. I believe in going to the knife fight with a AR15, not a bag of rocks.

13. No. I don't agree.
Obama is gracious and inspiring. That's his appeal. Anything that diminishes that, diminishes us all.

7. I'll bet they had NO INTENTION of EVER airing that ad.
They sent it out in an email, as a fundraising tool.

What do they get for their trouble? People who oppose the Democrats who have put their eyeballs on the ad, and maybe emailed the link to their frieds. Some donations. Some chatter. That's all they really wanted.

As for McCain denouncing it, that's even better still -- anyone who hasn't SEEN the ad runs around trying to find what it was that he denounced. Even MORE eyeballs on the ad.

And last, but not least, we see the fine and measured hand of Albritton Communications, that right wing bastion of sleaze, at work through their POLITICO arm. Ben Smith "reports" the story, and hands the ad around some more.

I wouldn't be surprised if the nightly news airs this as well, with a bit of "Tsk, tsking..." that might not be heard as people focus on the imagery.

There's a national component to that ad, in subtle fashion--it's not just about NC.

FWIW, Obama will probably win NC, unless he does something profoundly stupid or icky before the contest--in fact, I'd be very surprised if he didn't win it handily.

8. They did a lot of that
in my state in the '06 races. The ads threatened that if a Democratic majority took over we would have Nancy Palosi's 'San Fransisco' values represented. The RNC is a real nasty bunch propagandists who make sure that the bell can not be un-rung. People can say that they don't endorse the ad all they want but it's like a judge striking remarks and telling the jury to disregard what they have just heard. Yeah, right.

11. The voters in NC to whom that add was targeted....
Would never vote for a Democrat for President, regardless. The intent was to damage the Democrat (whoever wins the May 6th primary) candidate for governor in advance. Even if the add were to run, I don't think it would make a big difference in the gubernatorial race in the Fall or any difference at all in the Democratic Presidential primary. Democrats here seem to be be about 50% Obama, 30% Clinton and, like the party overall, 20% any-Democrat-would-be-far-better-than-McCain-and-why-don't-you-guys-calm-down? :-)
