I don't think adding people to an ignore list qualifies as staying open-minded.
In a forum where discussion is usually better than that of the average internet site, I think it's good to let everyone talk. I understand how annoyed people can get, though.

The way I see it hearing only what you want to hear dulls you to the debate. A diversity of opinions is healthy. Otherwise you get Fox News.

35. So, do you watch Fox News then? |

A diversity of opinions is great and all, but sometimes somebody comes in that rants and raves with sheer idiocy. Like Fox News does. I ignore Fox News by not tuned in to it. I put certain people here on ignore so I don't have to read some of the stuff I'm pretty sure they're going to spew. Same damn thing.
Because sometimes around here, debating with someone is about effective as shouting at Bill O'Reilly.

I never had anyone on my ignore list until early February. Now - 143 - just added two this morning but took a tombstoned one off.
I had a hard time putting some of them on as I have a great deal of respect for many of them. But I figured if I didn't, I'd lose that respect and I'd like to get back to the civil discussions of the old days as soon as possible when this is all over. So, like yours, they'll all come off as soon as we have a nominee.

thread is just plain silly. Not putting people on ignore for some lofty reason of not wanting to be "intolerant", or defending freedom of speech or whatever, is just fricking goofy. Putting somebody on ignore is not limiting anybody's freedom of speech, because by putting them on ignore is not stopping them from being read by others. Geez...
"unless its spam"... well, yeah, the people on my ignore list are spam as far as I am concerned. They're junk posts to me. I'm not going to spend my time reading some nitwit troll spewing on and on about something that will never change my mind just as I toss emails trying to sell me dick enlargement pills into the trash.

Seriously though, poor arguments MUST be countered by better ones. There are far too many people out there who will believe something if they are told it often enough. It is our duty to provide a counterpoint for every stupid thing uttered, even here.

I put known spammers and trolls on ignore. No, I don't consider it cowardly. My opinion is that if they have nothing to contribute but flamebait, it gets in the way of me reading what I want. Why should I have to waste mt time filtering through a bunch of junk?
However, there are a few trolls and ranters that I don't ignore, because I find their posts to be unintentionally hilarious.

I have been here since early '01, and never even USED "ignore" until a few weeks ago.. It's too hard to count them, but it's probably over 75..
Every so often, when we go on DefCon5 Alert, Skinner paroles all of them, and they disrobe, run amok and wander around, scaring children & small pets.
Most of the time they just hang around the dungeon downstairs, watching re-runs of Mayberry RFD, & The Carol Burnett Show.. Some favorite movies of theirs:.. "Hillary Christ, Superstar".."A Hillary Is Born"..Illinois versions 1 &2., .Scranton version 1, Little Rock version, DC version and New York versions 1-5. We also have "The Passion of the Hillary", "A Hillary Grows in Brooklyn" is a favorite of theirs, and I've had to purchase several copies.
I have given them brooms, but there's still Cheeto dust and peanut shells everywhere.

The cult of Obama leads to the most hilarious unintentional humor. Who would want to miss that?
Also, only cultists have to block out messages and other voices in their heads. Normal people don't have to worry about cognitive dissonance and perpetuating an echo chamber of responses.

But I only reserve my Ignore list for those that take pleasure in being jerks just for the sake of it. Those that are very intentionally disruptive, disrespectful, and just rude.
Thankfully, even with the heat of the primary season, those folks are very few. :)

I only put people on it who have never shown the slightest inkling of ability to post anything but content-free blather. Sadly, there's never a shortage of candidates, even with that high bar.

and put every single pro-Hillary poster I could find on ignore, just to see what GD: P was like. It was ok. Cool.
But then I got tired of that and took everyone off ignore, so now I have zero. I'm just wanting the end of the primaries to get here.

I removed all the tombstones from my ignore list, and I'm removing DU veterans (users that have been here for at least a couple years, and have lots of posts).
I'm gonna try to limit the plonk for the most part to trolls - anyone that fits the profile - user was just registered in the past couple months, small amount of posts, acts like a total douche.

And it is very noticeable when the ignore lists get disabled during high traffic.
Some people do nothing but come on here and post taunts or trollish stuff. This isn't information or something to ponder, it's simply total garbage. I see it in virtually every thread in a series of somebody vs. Ignored replies. Yes, I AM intolerant of schoolyard bullies and the like. It's a tool that's available and I'm going to make use of it.
