Poll question: Is "Because White Folks Won't Vote Him" A Good Enough Reason To Not Support Obama For POTUS?
Just checking the winds again.

(Prediction: This will be a close poll.)

21. I would say ditto but....
I am not a Rush fan. But I am white and I find Senator Obama has the potential to be a good President which Senator Clinton and McCain don't have.

4. Just because the Clintons want to put people of colour in "their place"
we don't have to play along. Many whites risked their lives to gain equal rights for all.

8. Maybe in theory, if the racism was so pervasive that he had no realistic chance of winning.
But it's already been established that, despite the ingrained racial prejudice that still exists in our society, Obama has a very good chance of whupping an old white man's ass in the general election. He sure as hell isn't Jesse Jackson '88 (no offense to the good Reverend, but the climate was undeniably different then).

So in short, I vote not just "no," but "hell no!"

26. It's too early to say... Democratic primary voters are a very different
breed from the other 2/3 or so that makes-up the electorate.

officially.

12. I'm a white 40 year old woman for Obama.
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 12:04 AM by Lisa0825
The African American vote has been the cornerstone of the Democratic party for DECADES. They have been more loyal than any other demographic group. If a fraction of the white vote won't vote for Obama because of his race then, in the words of Hillary, "SCREW 'EM!" Bowing down to their racism is the wrong answer. We should take the moral high road and support the candidate we believe in, despite fear mongering based on race.

Referring to an earlier thread, if the AA's will be thrown under the bus by the Democratic Party for Hillary, then I'll lay down in the road with them.

"white folks" will vote for Obama if your sales pitch doesn't presume that they're bigots.

20. Right, encouraging people to take it personally...
... would be a dumb political move, wouldn't it?

I think we DUers gaze at our navels looking for artifacts of the various forms of bias to an adequate degree. There are times when this kind of social instrospection is healthy, or at least benign.

This isn't one of those times, it's an election.

18. We were once told people would not vote for a Catholic for President.
JFK was elected. RFK would have been. Kerry should have been. I think we can assume it's not a deal breaker.

No Jewish president yet, But Lieberman (in the irony of all ironies) was the elected VP in 2000. I'd never vote for him again, but I doubt Russ Feingold or Barbara Boxer would face resistance, solely on that basis.

The nominee of this party will be an African American man. A woman will come in second place. Both of those facts are historically great news, regardless of how you personally feel about either of them.

The fact that so many young people have turned out to support Obama means that these ridiculous prejudices that have plagued this country for so long are on their way out. And if this election gives that process an extra kick in the ass, even better.

And yes, I expect to see a woman in the White House within my lifetime. Hopefully one that I can be proud to vote for. And probably an Asian American, and a Native American, and......dare I say it..... a non-heterosexual American.

That's what a little hope can do to ya. Let's make it happen, and fuck the naysayers!

It seems to imply that all whites are racist.

23. I was just watching Hardball. Chris had a guest on there that made me think
His guest said he did not think for instance that white women were choosing Hillary because of race. He said that it was more of a generational thing. They are Hillary's age and were growing up during the feminist movement. They want to see "one of them" break the glass ceiling. As for why they say they won't vote for Barack? It might be anger speaking at the moment more than anything. Perhaps they will vote for him in the end or perhaps they will not.

I think it is ridiculous not to nominate him because SOME whites might not vote for him. Well, some men might not vote for Hillary. Why have a primary season with an AA or woman if you are not going to allow them to become a serious nominee for president? Just to say, oh you won but we don't think you can win in the general election so we will take it away?

We find someone who embodies most of our core principles and we promote her vigorously.

33. Hi, I live in Nebraska...
We're a pretty "white" state. We're next to Iowa.. that's another "white" state. Umm..we both pushed like HELL to give our primaries to Obama - the black guy.

This argument is just stupid. Clinton likes to say that she should win the nomination because she can win the "big" states. Well maybe Obama should just go ahead and win the nomination because he seems to know how to win the "white" states... ohh.. and the "black" states too.

every white person I know where I live supports Obama. He campaign hqs here is staffed by white ppl... including lots of young white males! Hillary has african-american supporters, too.

Obama will be the next president of the united states and I, for one white woman, am looking forward to that moment. What a beautiful time to be alive and voting in the U.S. - to repudiate Bush, republicans, neocons, the rightwing so-called religious faction..

It's a new day.
