Rev Wright's words
REVEREND WRIGHT:
"It went down very simply. He's a politician, I'm a pastor. We speak to
two different audiences. And he says what he has to say as a
politician. I say what I have to say as a pastor. But they're two
different worlds."

Coming on PBS tomorrow (I believe). Huffingtonpost has parts of the interview if you want to read it. This Wright thing is not over.

5. I am not sure what is supposed to be wrong here.
The statement is clear and reasonable, and one that I could see myself making in the description of the circumstances. But I am biased, admittedly. Is there supposed to be a problem with the statement?

8. the part where he says
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 09:05 PM by terrell9584
"he's a politician, he says what he has to"

And this is his pastor who has known him for 20 years. That one statement can be jumped on. You can say it is unfair, you can say it is old politics and we need new politics, but that one statement hits right at the heart of what Obama's greatest asset has been in the campaign, his authenticity, honesty and character. It can be spun to imply that somehow Obama is just saying platitudes on the campaign trail as a point of politics and therefore might not believe it. It's how it can be spun. Axelrod needs to be collecting money to buy Wright a vacation trip to Nassau for the next six months because he is a liability and a liability only, and that's from a purely political standpoint.

11. But that is a part of the job, and true of every politician.
I suppose it could be "spun", but its not all that interesting. I guess - not having seen the whole thing - that Wright was talking about how Obama has had to deal with the uproar his own sermons had previously led to. Perhaps I am wrong...

7. We criticize politicians if they ignore us and we criticize politicians if they "pander" to others.
We are a nation of blaspheming, idolatorous, hypocrits who no longer believe in damnation.

13. And what exactly is the problem with that statement? It basically says that Obama DOES NOT agree
..with Reverend Wright, and that they don't discuss politics.

Just what Obama said... and it separates Obama from Wright's viewpoints.

18. I just watched the interview, and it is just fine.
It was a reasonable and intelligent and profound conversation, and it is a huge stretch to imagine anyone being offended or even perturbed. I can't see why the mention of Jeremiah Wright seems to upset people still - the more you learn of his background and hear what he has to say, the more he speaks like every dedicated Democrat I have known over the years. He is one of the good guys, and we would all be better off if there were more people as selfless and motivated as he has been.

You don't even need "context" for the snipped quote above. It is a simple truth.

Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 12:16 AM by MattP
It wasn't fine, they are going to replay his remarks another few thousand times and play whatever negative clips they can. There is no positive that can come from this. He totally called the speech in Philly just a Political speech, WTF.
