Molly Ivins, One More Time: "I Will Not Support Hillary Clinton For President"
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:35 AM by Syrinx

AUSTIN, Texas --- I'd like to make it clear to the people who run the Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for president.

Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone This is not a Dick Morris election. Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges.

The recent death of Gene McCarthy reminded me of a lesson I spent a long, long time unlearning, so now I have to re-learn it. It's about political courage and heroes, and when a country is desperate for leadership. There are times when regular politics will not do, and this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of bull that only the truth can provide relief.

Do not sit there cowering and pretending the only way to win is as Republican-lite. If the Washington-based party can't get up and fight, we'll find someone who can.

Damn straight, Molly!

And we have found someone who can!

4. Yes, please drag Ivans up from the dead.
I love reading her anti-feminist views. She loathed Hillary and any woman that accomplished what she couldn't. Now, lets get to the truth of the matter with her skewed statements that are brought back from the dead.

Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:45 AM by Syrinx
What are you talking about?

Molly Ivins was more of a feminist and more of a progressive than Hillary Clinton will ever be.

And everything she accomplished, she accomplished on her own. Without any wicked political machine at her back.

14. Oh please get real would ya ! ! ! !
She loved her some Bill Clinton, or what she called him once, "Big Dog", course he does have a smooth way of talking to the ladies. But she never liked Hillary or Ferraro or the ladies of the sort because she was jealous, bottom line.

I'll save you some time Googling.
Ann Richards was the Governor of Texas.

Molly had an intense dislike of phonys.

38. You left out Christine Todd Whitman and her tenure at the EPA.
Then again, any woman that criticizes another woman must be secretly jealous of them.

When you get a chance, pick-up an Ivins book and give yourself a full education on her views before posting such nonsense.

7. HIllary a feminist? Trading his rampant adultery for political capitol?
she's only in the running because of her marriage to Bill.

And her marriage to Bill - now thats hardly a good example of a feminist woman.

There are far more qualified women who could run for president.

49. You prefer how HRC tried to claim the late Ann Richards a supporter?
Til her sons came out and said "NOT SO FAST"

At least with this it is a past article written by the deceased giving her opinion. Not so with the HRC attempt to use Ann Richards.

6. The problem with quoting dead people is we don't
know if they would have changed their minds.

It's true Molly obviously felt that way at the time.

But she's not around to analyze the behavior of both candidates .. their positions .. their mistakes.

Maybe she would feel differently now.

Who would have guessed Bill Richardson would change his mind?

Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:54 AM by Syrinx
Though, I can't imagine anything that Hillary Clinton has done in the past fifteen months would have changed Molly's mind. If anything, I think Molly would be leading the charge against Senator Clinton even more emphatically.

As always, I could be wrong.

But I don't think so.

23. But she hasn't been around for this less than inspiring campaign,
and neither you, nor any of us, know how she would have reacted. My best guess would be that she would have had her own slant on the contest, and probably not a predictable one at that. That's what made her interesting, and distinguished her from those columnists marching lock-step after this candidate or that.

26. Molly was a good writer and a straight-shooter.

Will-o'-wisp speeches filled with feel-good generalizations were no more her style than "people's movements" orchestrated from the top down.

I doubt she would be sitting on the sidelines sipping the Kool-Aid; but she would probably be taking potshots at both our remaining candidates, sipping her whiskey on the rocks, ready to march down to the polls to vote for whichever far less than perfect candidate manages to be dragged over the finish line by the unelected super delegates.

22. I loved Molly....Because she didn't care what was popular or
cow tow to those who tried to bully her. I see similiar traits from Hilliary. O ya, my sister who lives in Texas said Molly was kind of dishuffled and always drinking. That is why she was uncompfortable with her opinions. Those ladies from Texas are so coiffed. Those that aren't, are considered .less. some how.

Could somebody do that? It would go great with this article.

Anyway, Molly was a TRUE progressive voice. She knew what the Clintons represented.

Or maybe she was just a big sexist?

43. The "I won't support Clinton because she is conservative" argument doesn't do much for me.
Obama's policies and Clinton's policies are nearly identical. Obama is not some sort of radical progressive. If you want to be generous, then he is a center-left politician. It would probably be just as easy to simply call him a centrist. He may not be part of the cabal of the DLC, which is its own special kind of insanity, but he's not exactly a radical liberal.

That's ok though, I know exactly why I support Obama and believe he is the right choice for 2008. Thus I'm not uncomfortable acknowledging these truths.

target of anti-male tirades on this very site for dissing a sister.

Turns out, she was advancing her progressive views of a given Democrat, and doig it damned well.

Some of the best political writing of my lifetime has been Molly Ivins on George W. Bush.
