Despite my support for Clinton, I do not find myself feeling mean-spirited or hateful toward Obama. |
|
Simply because I know that would be irrational.
I don't prefer Obama, and I'm not sure if I like him all that much, but I don't hate Obama nor do I hate anyone who supports Obama. What good would namecalling, petty nitpicking, or hateful remarks do but bring down myself and my candidate? I suppose I could throw all of my ego into my support for Clinton, taking every criticism of her personally and going on the attack every time I see yet another charge thrown at her, but that's not a way to live. I will not be on this planet in another fifty to sixty years, but the march of politics will continue. Why spoil my short time on this planet by acting aggressively toward others who I don't know personally for no more than a conflict between the Hatfield's and the McCoy's? It's ludicrous.
Live a little. Take a moment to go outside and breathe some fresh air. Play with your children. Your pets. Go take a walk in the park. A mountain hike. We live in America - where a choice in politics does not amount to a choice between whether or not we'll eat the next day (for most of us) or whether we'll be able to sleep in relative safety. We Democrats will have our moment to effect political change, and although I personally prefer for Hillary Clinton to lead that change, either of our candidates will capably deliver at least some of what we seek.
One of the greatest challenges in American democracy today is for it to survive the effects of the American ego. Why do political disagreements become such personal exercises? We are 230 years young and are still an experiment in self-rule. I hope one day, for the sake of its survival, that we all put our country (read: our society) before our atomized, self-flattering lives.

1. I'll say! I had a very nice conversation with a Hillary supporter the other day! |
|
I thought we would have degenerated into screaming "HILLBOT!" and "OBAMITE!" at eachother, but instead we just stated our reasons for support. We even completing each other's candidates (GASP!) :hi:

2. You ask a great question. Why do political |
|
disagreements become such personal exercises? For example, my personal exercise was the utter dismayment over someone telling me that illigal spying was not a good enough reason to impeach, and saw it more of an exercise in partisionism. I looked at this person, and could only contain the surg of blood to my head so long before I needed to change the subject. But before I did, I let this person know that I felt otherwise, and how nice for them that they were so innocent.

10. Some people need to feel that sensation of "power." |
|
When it's not power at all. Powerful people don't feel the need to seek out and acerbically destroy contrary opinions.
Your ability to restrain yourself demonstrates your own personal comfort with your political choices.

6. I think some people are naturally "conflict theorists" and that's how they see the world. |
|
They must always say provocative things, even in threads that explicitly argue against nonconstructive arguments... ((cough cough))

I think if we took the Obama/Clinton die-hards out of the equation, we would be fine. Of course I disagree with much of the way Hillary's campaing has been run, I don't find alot to disagree with about Hillary the person and candidate. Of coiurse I prefer Obama, but will I vote for Hillary if she gets the nomination? HELL YES!

16. Thanks for such a great statement. |
|
There are many of us out here who like them both and choose party over the politician. I will proudly vote for either of them. I wish they could form a unity ticket so we could kick some butt. An African American man and a woman on the same ticket. Now wouldn't that be something to behold? A girl can only dream.

18. If I See the Words, "Obamabots or HillBillybots," One More Time, I'm Gonna Puke. |
|
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 06:02 AM by mikekohr
I respect supporters of Senator Clinton although I have long been a backer of Senator Obama. We are family here. The foes are the policies of the Republican Party and it's tools, namely Senator McSurge.
Let us concentrate on the strengths of our candidates and stop the name calling and cat fights. If I see the words Obamabots or HillBillybots one more time I'm gonna puke. The lower we stoop to kneecap one another the higher McSurge rises in comparison. This is a primary reason we have lost 7 of the last 10 presidential elections. Let's not make it 8 of 11.
