Y'say you want a female president? There's one coming along.. a GOOD one, too
All the sturm und drang over Miss Hillary (apparently that's her new North Carolina moniker) is misplaced, bordering on frenetic.

BUT..fear not...

There is a REAL contender working her way through the ranks.

Janet Napolitano, Governor of Arizona.

This woman is someone who COULD be president.

I am so hoping that Obama picks her as hs running mate

After two terms, she would be 58 years old, a former governor, and two-term vice president...and best of all?

No horny, cranky ex-president husband shoving her through the curtain, like an overbearing stage-mother.

from wiki:

25th Governor of Arizona
Incumbent
Assumed office
January 6, 2003
Preceded by Jane Dee Hull
Born November 29, 1957 (1957-11-29) (age 50)
New York City, New York
Political party Democratic
Alma mater Santa Clara University, University of Virginia
Religion Methodist
Arizona Portal

Janet Napolitano (b. November 29, 1957) is a the current governor of the U.S. state of Arizona, and a member of the Democratic Party, originally elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. She is Arizona's third female governor, and the first female to win re-election.

In November 2005, Time magazine named her one of the five best governors in the U.S.

In February 2006, Napolitano was named by The White House Project as one of "8 in '08", a group of eight female politicians who could possibly run and/or be elected president in 2008.

Her placement on this list and her geographic location have also generated whispers of placement on a vice presidential ticket.

Napolitano was born in New York City to Jane Marie Winer and Leonard Michael Napolitano, who was the Dean of the University of New Mexico College of Medicine.

She has partial Italian heritage on her father's side and was raised a Methodist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she graduated from Sandia High School in Albuquerque in 1975 and was voted Most Likely to Succeed.

She graduated from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, where she won a Truman Scholarship, and then from the University of Virginia School of Law (Juris Doctor). Napolitano is a member of the Democratic Party. Her early professional career was as a Phoenix-area prosecuting attorney and as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona.

69. I've voted for her in five or six election cycles now I think
but I think she is well past 70 and has some health problems. Not cancer or anything, shingles actually if I remember correctly, but still it is getting late to start thinking about drafting her for the presidency.

But still she is going to win in this district in 2008, no doubt about that.

16. LOL ... you sly dog! Huckabee Index is ...
62 ... the number of remaining superdelegates Senator Obama needs to make it mathematically impossible for Senator Clinton to reach 2,025.

Then there's Huck 2.0, the Upgrade (from dailykos) ... A number of the superdelegates are add-ons and aren't even picked yet (some won't be picked until after the primaries are over), so that reduces the number of remaining superdelegates to endorse by about 65, thus making the Huck 2.0 number somewhere around 43.

And today, there is Super Huck 3.0 (from demconwatch) ... "Mr. Super" is an anonymous elected superdelegate who writes on demconwatch that almost all the elected superdelegates (governors, senators, representatives) are members of the Pelosi Club (will endorse the candidate who reaches the halfway mark of pledged delegates). The nonelected supers (there are about 126 DNC supers left) are up for grabs. So, the Super Huck 3.0 number is -102 (negative 102) because Senator Obama's chances of winning the most pledged delegates is about 99%. Negative 102 means Senator Clinton has already lost this entire contest.

She's very popular here.

McBush gets lambasted almost daily in the newspaper. The Phoenix paper will endorse him but it'll be lukewarm based on the things I've been reading lately on the editorial page. I doubt he'll win re-election should he try after failing to get the presidency.

14. No can do
Obama is going to have to go with a white, mainstream, heterosexual male -- preferably one who was in the military. He will need to balance all the negatives people might have with him. I'm not saying he's gay, but he will need to have someone who fits into absolutely no minority categories. He can't name a woman, a black, a gay or lesbian, hispanic, Asian, whatever. Sad, but a fact of political life.

Janet Napolitano built her record going after big corporations like Arthur Andersen,
who had contributed lavishly to one of the DLC's key leaders, Sen. Joe Lieberman.
She also built up a record prosecuting Qwest, a company that has been a major backer
of the New Democrats. Wall Street, which contributes heavily to the DLC.

But it might make her a good attorney general, should John Edwards not want that job.

I want an AG that will take on corporatism. Good to know we have at least two great possibilities.

As far as a VP choice...

PRO

Sitting governor - that's a necessity for this ticket. (No senators)

Western state- also a plus. In my opinion, Arizona is possible to "flip" to a blue state.

Added psychological boost - winning McLoony's home state?

Woman on the ticket - neutralize the "sexist" crap coming from er... camp you know who.

CON

Seems to be a general feeling that the "general public" likes candidates with "easy" names. Bush. Gore. Kerry. etc. Would they be able to handle "Obama/Napalitano"?? - yeah it sounds ridiculous, but I'm dead serious in thinking this might be an issue.

Other governors like Richardson might be able to bring more to the ticket, with his resume. energy and international diplomacy are certainly good things to have experience in on the ticket.

Dunno.... guess I've got mixed feelings about this one. I'd have no problem voting for Janet if this was the ticket. But is it the right ticket for this exact moment in history?

It's not as is she's the ONLY woman on earth and if she doesn't win, there will NEVER be another chance.. By her runnng and losing, it actually makes it MORE possible the next time.

A woman who runs next time will have plenty of things to review, and know what NOT to do  Sometimes knowing what NOT to do, is more important than doing what you think you SHOULD do.:)

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano Speaks About Money in Politics

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will speak about money in politics on Thursday, April 10 at 6pm at the Harvard Club of New York.

Napolitano, the nation's only governor whose campaign was fully financed with public funds, is a rising political star.

After the Governor's remarks, New York Times editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal will moderate a public conversation.

The event is the Brennan Center's first ever Living Constitution lecture, a project sponsored by the former law clerks to Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan. The Brennan Center for Justice is a leading proponent of campaign finance reform.

The event will be at the Harvard Club of New York (located at 35 West 44th Street) at 6pm and will include a cocktail reception.

43. I hope there isn't a woman on the ticket
The reason being, I don't believe our country would elect both a black and a woman at the same time, and for now my only concern is for Obama to win. The VP really isn't that important anyways.

Having Obama as President would be far, far better than having McCain as President because a woman and a black were both on the same ticket.

Its just way too risky.

Even Bill Richardson I would be nervous about. while I feel having him as VP wouldn't be nearly as risky, it could still potentially be a bad move.

Personally, I would choose Bill but as I said, if its going to cause problems I much rather stick with a white man.

This might be the BEST time for it..

Mccain is WEAK..and even his own party's not behind him.. He only got 73% running un-opposed in PA, and he cannot raise money.. I don't see many republicans going to the mat for him..

republicans are strategic-thinkers.. they are probably willing to let democrats try and clean up their mess.. After 8 long years of mis-management, I think they are happy to sit this one out and let a dem house, senate & WH try to clean it all up.. That gives them 4 years to meddle at the edges, just enough, and to re-group..

They may be willing to risk it.. They don't seem to like Mccain enough to support him..

things would be different. I would want Bill Richardson as VP.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, however the polls are all saying McCain and Obama are in an extremely close match. Most give McCain a slim advantage.

I'll wait to see the polling aftermath once Hillary is forced to quit. It really depends on how close it is after that.

As I said, #1 priority needs to be Obama getting into office. Anything else could be extra. I know a lot of Hillary supporters are anxious for a woman VP now, but I feel it would only hurt our chances in an extremely tight race.

and will help in the West and Southwest. It would be nice to have a VP that could run 8 years from now. I said yesterday I'd be ok with Wesley Clark, but one of the disadvantages with him is age. He's 63, if Obama ran with him, I guess he could change vice-presidents for reelection (which hasn't been done in a LONG time). I doubt Clark would want to run 8 years from now though, that would make him well over 70.

53. Perhaps Clark would be willing to only serve one term..willingly
so she could come onboard for the 2nd term..If the first term was a good one, no one would object to that, I'm sure :)

55. She is very popular here. I am afraid that certain things will be said though
right wingers here in Phoenix concerning her marital status or lack thereof.

57. They say that shit about Hillary, and she's married.
Doesn't matter who we run, they're going to dog anyone anyway.

59. Sounds good
I've been thinking about governors that would be good VP choices. I think having someone with executive experience would be a good thing. Sounds like a really intelligent person too. I would be curious to know about her early career as a prosecutor. You know the Repubs will be looking at that---as well as the U.S. Attorney stint.

63. honestly I think it will be another 30 years minimum before a woman will even be allowed to run
We simply aren't ready. Sexism is so socially acceptable. It's in our music, our books, our talk shows, etc. So many times have I been told, "I'm not sexist, I just don't want a woman president" that I could just spit. I just don't see it happening for a long, long time. I honestly think we will be the among the last of the minorities to hold the white house.
