McAuliffe, circa 2004: Michigan "will not get seated" if they break rules

Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 02:54:33 PM PDT

We already had top Clinton supporter Harold Ickes, who voted to sanction Michigan at the DNC, then now complaints about the sanctions he himself approved.

Now we have Terry McAuliffe himself, as DNC chairman, enforcing the very rules he now thinks should be broken.

Mark Nickolas digs out the relevant passages from Terry McAuliffe's own book:

"I'm going outside the primary window," told me definitively.

"If I allow you to do that, the whole system collapses," I said. "We will have chaos. I let you make your case to the DNC, and we voted unanimously and you lost."

He kept insisting that they were going to move up Michigan on their own, even though if they did that, they would lose half their delegates. By that point Carl and I were leaning toward each other over a table in the middle of the room, shouting and dropping the occasional expletive.

"You won't deny us seats at the convention," he said.

"Carl, take it to the bank," I said. "They will not get a credential. The closest they'll get to Boston will be watching it on television. I will not let you break this entire nominating process for one state. The rules are the rules. If you want to call my bluff, Carl, you go ahead and do it."

We glared at each other some more, but there was nothing much left to say. I was holding all the cards and Levin knew it.

29. linky linky...I'd love more for my files.
It's folks like you, Octafish, SLAD, Autorank and so many others (I'll stop there so as not to leave the many DUers I might leave out) who have enlightened me. Sheesh, I had never even heard of PNAC when I first came here. I came to DU to spread what I witnessed in Ohio in '04 and to get folks to support our fight to contest the election. DUers helped put pieces of the giant puzzle together. It's you and the other who deserve the thanks. :hi:

33. I do wish wish would hear more skepticism on the outcomes of elections, though.
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 10:12 AM by mod mom
Theticaly have faith based elections-no verifiability with machines that have bee shown to be inaccurate, unreliable and tamper prone (FOR ANY DOUBTERS OUT THERE):

Nothing is more important to the integrity of a democracy than than fair and transparent elections. The GAO recently released a 107 page scathing report on Electronic Voting Machines in our country. The report states that Electronic Voting Machines in the U.S. are NOT SECURE, NOT ACCOUNTABLE, NOT TRANSPARENT, NOT ACCURATE, AND ARE UN CERTIFIABLE. A bipartisan panel which included both Republican Congressman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Democratic Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) released a joint news release (a true rarity in these days of divisive politics) regarding his report, yet the main stream media has ignored it's important findings. Here is a link to the GAO Report:

http://www.gao.gov/highlights/d05956high.pdf

STUDY: VOTING SYSTEMS VULNERABLE

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s electronic voting systems have “critical security failures” which could impact the integrity of elections in the Buckeye State, according to a review of the systems commissioned by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

“The results underscore the need for a fundamental change in the structure of Ohio’s election system to ensure ballot and voting system security while still making voting convenient and accessible to all Ohio voters, “ Secretary Brunner said Friday in unveiling the report.

“In an era of computer-based voting systems, voters have a right to expect that their voting system is at least as secure as the systems they use for banking and communication,” she said.

THE REPORT

The Evaluation & Validation of Election-Related Equipment, Standards & Testing report, known as EVEREST, is a comprehensive review of voting systems revealing startling findings on voting machines and systems used in Ohio and throughout the country. The Ohio study tested the systems for:
- risks to vote security,
- system performance, including load capacity,
- configuration to currently certified systems specifications, and
- operations and internal controls that could mitigate risk.

The $1.9 million study, paid for using federal funds, was structured to allow two teams of scientists, corporate and academic, to conduct parallel assessment of the security of the state’s three voting systems - Election Systems & Software (ES&S), Hart Intercivic and Premier Election Solutions (formerly Diebold) - in both voting and board of elections environments. Separate research was conducted on each voting system’s performance, configuration and operations and internal controls management. A bipartisan team of 12 election board directors and deputy directors advised the study and evaluated all reports, participating with the secretary in making recommendations for change.

While some tests to compromise voting systems took higher levels of sophistication, fairly simple techniques were often successfully deployed.

“To put it in every-day terms, the tools needed to compromise an accurate vote count could be as simple as tampering with the paper audit trail connector or using a magnet and a personal digital assistant,” Brunner said.

thanks for posting this. It's really disappointing to see the Clinton campaign using the Bush-y/Rovian "move the goalposts" kind of tactics and turning back on their words. I really wanted to be a STRONG supporter of whomever was nominated, but that's getting harder by the day.

15. Oh madfloridian, we know you have been on it.

If not for you, I probably would have just thrown my head in my hands and said to hell with it all, give 'em the delegates.

But when you look at the facts and past practice, neither Florida nor Michigan really deserve anything due to the poor leadership of their Dems. Michigan, for the most part, understands this. Florida, on the other hand, seems to have a ton of Rethugs masquerading as Dems in that state.

I know many retirees from Illinois who are moving to Florida. Maybe one day, y'all will have leadership you can be proud of.

17. Hey, Markos...did you know Levin made a deal with Terry? corrected link
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:06 PM by madfloridian
The result was the committee that made the rules Levin's state is breaking. :eyes:

Carl Levin and Terry McAuliffe made a deal about primaries in 2004.

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1483

"The panel, which carried the unwieldy name of Commission on Presidential Nomination Timing and Scheduling, made two sets of recommendations, one dealing with the opening phase of the nominating calendar and the other with the later phases.

The commission came into existence as part of a bargain between former DNC chairman Terence R. McAuliffe and Sen. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.). Levin has long agitated against what he calls the privileged position of Iowa and New Hampshire, which hold the first caucus and first primary every four years. During the 2004 presidential campaign cycle, McAuliffe bought peace with Levin by promising to appoint a commission after the election if the senator would agree not to try to blow up the calendar for that year."

23. we keep seeing this over and over
with the Clinton campaign.

I wondering that maybe in a certain future year, campaigns will automatically know they will never get away with this.

It seems the Clinton campaign which has older staffers haven't learnt their lessons.

Bill talking about go with the hope candidate, not the fear candidate
Hillary being found out on Tuszla
All the old quotes from various staffers like the one above.

I've seen maybe a few tiny things like this from the Obama camp, but certainly nothing like this.

And MCCain is like 5x worse than Clinton on stuff like this.

31. Selective memory on history, ethics and math
He lost the election for Kerry, damn glad we have Dean that
understands history, ethics and math.

It needs to be posted to help rote memory.

Rote memory refers to the ability to learn certain information as a habit pattern. The child who has problems in this area is unable to recall with ease those responses which should have been automatic, such as the alphabet, the number system, multiplication tables, spelling rules, grammatical rules, etc.
