5. So far it's great! Did you know he attented to Prez Johnson while in was a serviceman?
I had no idea.

Recounted how he left the president in ICU several hours post op to go on a break, and upon his return, he saw some secret service agents talking into their microphones. And next thing he knows as he approaches the door, he gets tackled. He screams in pain and his assistant comes out to tell the agents who he is.

Bill Moyers is an excellent interviewer...he can actually listen. That's a rarity now days.

But again, Barack Obama is running for the presidency, not reverend Wright.

And remember, Hillary would nuke Iranian babies. Is that taken out of context. Is that a snippet? A sound byte?

30. A good reference in Time to Wright and patriotism versus nationalism
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1734809,00.html

Even the angry comments of Jeremiah Wright have to be read as the bitter complaint of a spurned lover. Like millions of other blacks, Wright was willing to serve the country while suffering rejection. He surrendered his student deferment in 1961, voluntarily joined the Marines and, after a two-year stint, volunteered to become a Navy corpsman. He excelled and became valedictorian, later a cardiopulmonary technician and eventually a member of the President's medical team. Wright cared for Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery, earning three White House letters of commendation.

Dick Cheney, born in the same year as Wright, received five deferments--four while an undergraduate or graduate student and one as a prospective father. Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush used their student deferments to remain in college until 1968. Clinton did not serve, and Bush was on active duty in the National Guard for two years. If time in uniform is any measure, Wright, much more than Cheney, Clinton or Bush, embodies Obama's ideal of "Americans have shown their love of country by struggling and sacrificing and risking their lives to bring us that much closer to our founding promise."

Wright's critics have confused nationalism with patriotism. Nationalism is the uncritical support of one's country regardless of its moral or political bearing. Patriotism is the affirmation of one's country in light of its best values, including the attempt to correct it when it's in error. Wright's words are the tough love of a war-tested patriot speaking his mind--one of the great virtues of our democracy. The most patriotic thing his nation can do now is extend to him the same right for which he was willing to die.

45. best definition of nationalism EVER
"Nationalism: A state of mind where one hates another's country more than one loves one's own".

From an impeccable and devastating source: Percival Rech-Malleczwen who wrote it in his journal, later published after his death at the hands of the Gestapo, as "Diary Of A Man In Despair".

"What price a forest if the "national" interest calls for a cellulose factory? Or a German cathedral that stands in the way of an autobahn? What is the value of a tiny remnant of the German soul when aggression is in the works and an entire nation is being systematically turned into cavemen—when their spiritual center is to be destroyed, and they are to be turned into an amorphous mass, whose only form is formlessness itself?

But we must be completely clear: Why, if nationalism really is one of the basic impelling forces of mankind, as its apologists contend, was it discovered in such comparatively recent times as the French Revolution? How is it that this "basic force" did not exist in the days of the Song of the Niebelungs? And how does one explain the fact that in 1400 there was a German nation, but no nationalism—while today, when nationalism is in full bloom, even Goebbels gags a little at the statement that this conglomeration of wage earners, sergeants-gone-berserk, and virgin-typists is a nation? If nationalism is truly the hallmark of a people in the prime of its youth and energies, how does it happen that under its aegis morality decays, ancient customs die out—that men are uprooted, the steadfast derided, the thoughtful branded, the rivers poisoned, and the forests destroyed?"

That's just a snip from the book. And btw, he was undoubtedly a conservative and a terrible elitest, but man, was he prescient. The above passage was written in 1940.

But in the context of this show I don't see anything he said is that bad. He preaches like a Baptist preacher though and I can see how somebody who wasn't familiar with that sort of preaching would take the yelling for wild anger. I grew up with that though so I see it more as just building up to the climax of his sermon.

69. I think most people are just too lazy to seek out the sermons to get the context,
and they have problems thinking critically about these issues.

It's much easier just to be told what to think by the tv. I can understand how people are disturbed when all they see is the 30 second snippets that are continuously blasted. It's not like the media has tried to put the comments in context or explain that this guy is a preacher in a respected mainstream church who has done a lot of good things for this country.

54. This was an outstanding interview
The moment this whole 'scandal' erupted I researched Rev. Wright. I knew a great deal about Senator Obama but very little about Rev. Wright. Afterwards, I was incensed by what the media was portraying him as and wrote nearly everyone I could think of about it, including every media outlet. Unfortunately, too many people took the media's word at face value and never did the digging. I hope this interview is widely shown IN FULL in the same media that so abused his character, but you can bet it won't.

It's up to us to get it out there.

Bill Moyers is an excellent interviewer...he can actually listen. That is a rarity, almost nonexistent, in the MSM today.

This interview, and readings, almost reconstituted my faith in the human condition...almost. There are too many sheep accepting the "gospel" of FOX, CNN, et al. Too lazy to think for themselves. Would like to believe that this isn't true...but.
