Outside a Bucks County polling place on Tuesday... |
|
Bucks County is where we live, a county north of Philadelphia.
And outside the polling place, a lovely table set up by the local Republican committee with a welcoming sign:
"Re-register in Republican Party Here after voting for Hillary."
Table crowded with chummy, well attired folks taking care of business; True story. Heard it from my daughter's best friend who lives in Plumstead Township.
They were horrified, as we all should be.
How is this permitted?

4. The Township Comissioner is fuming... |
|
But it seems there's nothing newsworthy being done.... Do the powers-that-be simply shrug their shoulders?
This stuff is poison, and the RW is doing an effective job paint the Dems as losers..simply by throw a 'sabot into the machinery.'

8. There isn't anything wrong with this |
|
People had to be registered in the party they wanted to vote in before March 24th. They can change their registration back as soon as they vote.
I had quite a few people who are independents take 2 voter registration forms from me. One to switch to a D so that they could vote in the primary and a second to switch back to independent as soon as the primary was over.

15. Is there any way to track those numbers? |
|
Here in Illinois, it is a matter of record what party primary ballot you took in any given election. In fact, it is such an open thing we actually ID voters for GOTV efforts based on how many times they have voted Dem and do they show up for both primary AND municipal elections.
Is that available and reported info there in PA? If it is, I'd think you could very easily take that info about those registration changes and estimate the impact it had in that election. Frankly, it is a tough nut to crack to make any sort of case that those voters went for any one candidate over another so it will not help or hurt anyone's campaign--but it sure is info that the local Dem party would be interested in seeing.
Regards!

17. I don't believe we track anything like that |
|
If there is that kind of information, my guess is that the local parties monitor it?

18. I read the other day that if you cross over with the intent |
|
to defraud or interfere with an election, it is illegal in many places. But, proving intent is difficult.

20. That may very well be the case |

I know people I signed up were wanting to vote D to support the candidate, not against.

16. sorry but it's perfectly legal |
|
do you know anywhere in the constitution where it states you can't do this? There is NO way they could prosecute anyone for this.

19. There's a printed oath or something on the reg form in some venues |
|
where you swear or affirm you're not attempting to interfere with an election.
I'm sorry, I can't remember where I read this but it was probably during the first Rush flap a few weeks ago.

I don't know what else to say.

It's pretty obvious who the Republicans want, and why.

5. But how many people were actually re-registering? |
|
This is the second story and perhaps more important for the election. Many Republicans may have changed their registration. But do we really know the reason? It could be out of absolute disgust with their party and they have no intention of going back. Or it could be to sabotage the Democratic primary. Perhaps getting an idea of how many have changed back their registration will let us know the reason.

11. That's the question.... |
|
Although the Bucks County Democratic Party website has daily updates of figures, the county Repubican Party shut down any information of registration after the deadline.
I do know there were some sincere cross overs, but the presence of that registration table is just too obvious.
Pennsylvania does not have any restrictions on 'politicking' at a polling place. I grew up in Chicago, and I've heard all the jokes about Chicago politics, there were strict laws against any kind of partisan campaigning withing 500 feet of a polling place.
But this is just too much.

10. Heard it from your daughter's best friend, eh? Sure she didn't hear it from someone? |
|
I suspect it is HALF TRUE.
Yes, the GOP set up tables to try to get back some of the crossovers. They ANNOUNCED this ahead of the contest. It was in all the papers, they sent out emails and mailers.
Not all of them crossed over for "Hillary" though.
What, the ones who crossed over for Obama (who so many here argue has better "GOP appeal" than Clinton) were not welcome at this anecdotal table?
The trick to a good "story" is to not push it too far. And without a picture, this is just a story designed to fluff up and incite the BO camp.

13. I don't doubt the veracity of the speaker. |
|
This is a rural area, the young lady who went to vote with her mother is a professional, as is her mother. They are not back fence gossips.
Yes, I know there were some sincere cross-overs... People I know (our township superviser), and Congressman Patrick Murphy's wife... I doubt that they ran right to the table to re-register as a republican.
Without a picture?
