Obama crumbles before Faux News--& embraces Repug issues:
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 06:56 PM by rodeodance

Here is the rough and tough bluster before the interview:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/04/senior_obama_adviser_obama_wil.php

"Obama's decision to go on Fox News has prompted a lot of discussion about the Illinois Senator's relationship with Rupert Murdoch and whether Obama is trying to "court" the media mogul in advance of the general election.

It's also been met with some dismay in the blogosphere, where folks had worked hard to push Dems to boycott Fox as a way of snuffing out whatever is left of the network's credibility.

But how do Obama and his advisers view this? What do they have to say about it?

The senior Obama adviser insists that Obama is under no illusions about Fox and what it represents, and that this isn't about courtship at all, and vows a confrontational approach on Sunday.

Here is what the adviser IM-ed me about this today:

We are clear-eyed about Fox’'s role in the dissemination and amplification of Republican talking points this election. They have been the tip of the spear when it comes to repeatedly broadcasting some of the most specious of rumors about Obama. He is going on their Sunday show to take Fox on, not because we have any illusion about their motives or politics in this election.
The Obama adviser declined to detail how he'd be taking on Fox. But if Obama does this, it could end up playing to his advantage. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out".

What actually happened:
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/04/26/obama-no-more-debates-before-next-primary/

"Wallace said that if Obama had won Pennsylvania he may not have accepted the FOX News Sunday invitation. But he said that once Obama met him for the interview, the Illinois senator was “friendly” and discussed several moderate-to-Republican viewpoints, making an apparent effort to broaden his appeal.

“He made it very clear he was not some left … liberal and he had been mischaracterized as such,” Wallace said. “I think this was an effort to sort of restore or regain the brand that he had some months ago, when he was saying there wasn’t a Republican solution, or a Democratic solution. It was a new politics and it needed to be a coalition.”

Not only did he cave..but he embraced Rethug issues..

Obama will scoot to the right, just a bit at a time, giving his supporters ample opportunity to explain and defend his *W.O.R.M. manuevers until one day, lo and behold, the real Obama will stand before them.

Maybe it will be the day as POTUS when he nominates a conservative to the Supreme Court so he can keep playing "Mr. Nice Guy" for the Republicans.

43. You don't think it is elitist to claim you know better what others think than they do?
Perhaps you think it is odd because you've confused the pronoun references.

"Someone who knows what "they" know better than they do."

They is a plural pronoun and cannot, therefore, refer back to Someone, which is singular and would need to be refered back to by one of the singular pronouns, either he or she.

Be that as it may, the post it was in reply to was a statement about what "THEY DON'T KNOW".

115. The OP was about Obama on Fox. I think Fox knows he isn't a leftie.
No doubt Obama knows that Fox knows, and the game goes on anyway.

But since you defined elitist as you did, your definition seemed more to apply to someone who is patronizing, perhaps, but not elitist. I think of elitists as people who consider themselves superior because of their lifestyle choices, not because they think they possess more insight into what a person thinks than the person themselves. Or maybe that's being paternalistic rather than patronizing.

120. Okay, I checked the Cambridge Dictionary
Definition
elite
the richest, most powerful, best educated or most highly trained group in a society:

elite
adjective
Elite (= A group of excellent) troops were airlifted to the trouble zone.

elitism
noun
when things are organized for the benefit of a few people with special interests or abilities:

elitist
adjective
based on elitism:

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=25209&dict=CALD

That's what I think of as being elitist. Perhaps the term has lost the intent of its original meaning since it's been thrown around so much in the last few years.

He had to discuss republican issues because he needs republicans in remaining places, and fox news has labeled him the most far left candidate, even further to the left than Kerry.

Hillary's brand is all about the people - you and me and our loved ones.

And of course, you prefer to stay with your opinions instead of facts.

107. ok...
ooh...I guess I "misspoke" I must be tired, and it IS late...

What I should have said was the the other two front-runners were not even on the ticket.
that would be Edwards and Obama. And many, many people didn't vote because they were told by the Party leaders and State officials that their vote WOULDN'T COUNT.
to try to count this vote is not only a disservice to the one remaining candidate, but the hundreds of people who didn't vote.

this isn't really that hard of a concept.

then immediately trash the rules, there's no more group cohesion, and precedent has been established for anyone and everyone to break the rules. It's FATAL.

During the roll call, I could hardly believe my ears, when I heard she'd voted yes. I tried every combination of reasons I could come up with, but I couldn't figure out why, until this last few months and hearing her repeat over and over again stuff about how you have to be tough and she's a fighter. That was her message all along . . . why? Because she has been planning to run for pResident for a very very long time.

This isn't about whether she actually "voted FOR war". It's about the fact that she supported the possibility that thousands and thousands of innocent people could die. She supported the chance that they could die BECAUSE she knew she would be running for pResident and her advisers told her she'd have to be "strong on defense".

The kickoff slogan
“I’m in it to win it,” in retrospect, said way too much about the mentality of the campaign. It didn’t seem to be about the American people, but about her and her coterie of well-placed acolytes inside the Beltway.

In fact, if you were paying attention, you would have noticed that early on Hillary would routinely use the word "I" several dozen times in her stump speech whereas Obama used "we". Remember "Yes, WE can" versus "I've got solutions." The campaign rhetoric serves up a crystal clear contrast.

106. Are you aware that the way the appropriations are bundled, he'd have to stop the money
for Veterans and for Military Families, and for all kinds of tactical opertions, leaving our troops un-supplied in enemy territory, in order to stop the money for combat operations.

Kucinich gets to say whatever he wants to say; it doesn't matter whether what he says relates to the real situation or not, BECAUSE he is NOT a contender.

I have been in the streets against this war since 2002. Unless and until the appropriations are un-bundled, the funding can't be stopped as long as the troops are in harms way. They MUST be withdrawn or redeployed somewhere FIRST, then the funding can be frozen until the pResident gives in and brings them all of the way home.

I always worry about the malicious twisting the media can apply to simple interviews and debates, but this one seemed to be uniquely civil and relevant.

I live in a RW town where everyone watches Fox (though I have only seen it in youtube clips) and it sounds like a very positive thing that Obama braved the exposure and did well, addressing the questions well that most concern the viewers.

Thanks again!
