Why is Obama afraid to Debate Hillary?
The latest report of the daily tracking survey by the Gallup Poll today shows a dead-heat between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton among Democrats nationally.

by Mark Silva

Somebody wants a debate really badly. Somebody else doesn't.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, tied today with Sen. Barack Obama nationally in the latest Gallup daily tracking poll and within the margin of error in a virtual tie with Obama in recent polls in Indiana heading toward a crticial May 6 primary there, called on the junior senator from Illinois to revive a tradition started by another Illinoisan: Joining her in a "Lincoln-Douglas'' styled debate.

But Obama, in an interview that FOX News will be airing tomorrow, made it clear that he is finished (at least through Indiana) debating his rival Democrat, whom he leads in pledged party delegates and undisputed primary election votes in their quest for the presidential nomination.

"What I think the people of Indiana deserve is a real one-on-one debate where Sen. Obama and I right there in Indiana discuss these issues,'' Clinton said today in South Bend. "Now I have accepted the debates that have been offered, and actually Indiana has a debate commission which kind of organizes this, makes sure it's fair and that nobody gets any special advantage.

"I've said I'll be anywhere anytime in order to debate because I think the people of Indiana after having wandered in the wilderness of American politics for forty years deserve a debate,'' Clinton said. "Who knows, we might even carry Indiana in the fall if we start with a good debate right here.

...will Obama be wearing a Chicken suit at his next Indiana rally? If not...he should be!

148. So he won't fight McCain in the GE, too, if he doesn't want to? Ya think the Repubs

147. Geez, keep dragging this so-called argument out everytime the question of a new debate
comes up.

So, is he up to the challenge or not? If he was so unhappy with the moderators the last time, why then won't he do a debate WITHOUT them? Afraid he'd screw up again, besides the uhms and ahs, since he has no teleprompters or scripts to help him?

Debates test how a candidate deals with anything thrown at him or her, shows whether the person has a strong mettle, regardless of the type of question asked. If he were prez, will he also want to pick and choose which issue or problem he'll deal with?

153. It is normal for the trailing candidate to want more debates.
The leading candidate has little to gain from a 23rd debate.

This format wouldn't happen anyway. I think he should call her bluff. But, if he agreed, it would never end up with a non-moderated debate. She's just making headlines.

158. It would never happen.
No network would carry a moderator-free debate. If he accepted, it would inevitably fall into a "normal" debate or not happen.

But, he doesn't NEED it. She does. He can do better going to the people direct. She NEEDS to have another debate in hopes of damaging Obama more.

They are each going to try to do what will benefit them more.

163. He doesn't need to do it. period.
He could do well or flop. If he does well he gains little, if he flops he loses some. That's it. It's a high-risk low-gain.

Hillary NEEDS it. she is trailing and needs to hurt Obama. She needs every chance she can get. Obama can essentially, at this point, ignore her. He can move on to attack McCain and do well enough to clinch the Nomination. There is very very little for him to gain in this offer.

It's the same reason he is mentioning Hillary very little lately. If he attacks her, he will be criticized for not practicing the new politics of hope and change. He ignores her and is accused of not being able to seal the deal.

It's not sealed, but the envelope has been licked.

He doesn't WANT to do it. Why is he talking to FOX now, when he talked a lot about boycotting the network? Is he desperate or something, after the poor showing in PA and in the last debate?

123. In 2006 her opponent was a fringe candidate with, at most 13% of the vote.
As of today, Hillary and Obama are tied in Indiana and effectively tied nationally. The voting public, by their growing viewership of these debates, shows that they want to see more debates between the two.

Those are among the things that make this sitution different than during her senate primary in 2006, where her victory was never in contention.

Another reason why Obama should face up to another debate is that the voters want more information. Too bad for them that Obama, as calculating a politician as ever came out of the Daley Machine, is determined not to give them any.

33. I take offense at all the namecalling, and "chicken out"
but I think he would do well to take her up on it. She has proposed a one on one, no moderator, actual debate] - something we have yet to see.

Bullshit questions about flag pins and rev wright and Bosnia should be out of bounds. But policy questions, "how are you going to accomplish..." questions, between the two would be reasonable. Obama would do just fine, and could put to rest, once and for all, any doubt in anyone's mind as to who has what it takes.

This could be a huge favor to him - it would be like her prepping him for the big time. Not that he necessarily needs that, but hey, I'll take all the insurance I can get.

He WILL be "debating" mccain in a few of the moderated dog-and-pony shows - unless - unless - they do this one as she proposes, he goes on to get the nomination - and he then challenges mccain to the same deal. THAT would be brutal. They'd have to declare the smear rule after the second inning. mccain would never do it, of course, but then all teh snide remarks now aimed at Obama could be aimed at mccain.

I said there have been 21 debates. There have been 21 debates. Even though most of the debates included more people than just the two of them, as a former Edwards supporter, I know that Obama and Clinton each got a lot of questions and got to talk a lot. It is silly to ignore those debates as actually having happened.

19. What topics would be covered in a debate? Why should a candidate
waste several days prepping for a debate when that time could be put to use putting out the message the candidate wants to deliver. I've been disappointed by the debates, and I realize it's because Obama never gets a chance to focus on what he wants to do but instead is stuck answering gotcha questions and responding to whatever extreme hypothetical someone thinks up.

you will be staying after Hillary Wins the Nomination..

Imagine, if Obama had only taken-up Hillary's debate offer. Sort of cowardly for a US Presidential hopeful to shy away from an itty bitty debate challenge..What will the World think? Hillary too strong for Obama? Hillary tipping the scales? Maybe.

30. it's really pretty simple...
the loser always wants to debate, the winner doesn't want to waste the time when he could be campaigning..

much like Hill's senate run:

Her opponent, Jonathan Tasini, is low on almost everything, from funds to name recognition. Mrs. Clinton has successfully ignored Mr. Tasini all summer, and now it seems clear that she has no intention of responding to his demands that she meet him in a debate.

44. I don't believe Senator Clinto knows...
what a 'Lincoln-Douglas' debate is. If she just means a un-moderated free for all then Senator Obama makes a good tactical choice in turning her down. If she really means an LD debate in the full NFL format then it would be a great step upwards from anything I've ever seen touted as a 'debate' in US electoral politics.

Definition of 'Lincoln-Douglas' Debate

(Note: 'NFL' is not the National Football League :-)

Now, if they had a town hall meeting, then I think Obama should do it. But, I agree, a debate "unmoderated" is like suicide....

I don't waste my time debating my right-wing relatives. It's not fear. It's just a case of been-there-done-that and there's no advantage to me. A waste of time.

The real question is why does Hillary desperately need to debate yet once again.

Maybe Obama should agree to a debate -- but have the debate questioners be from the European media -- drawn at random for a list of accredited journalists.

I'll be that would shut her yap right quick. She couldn't take being asked real questions by real reporters on real issues. She's used to deflecting the stupid questions being asked by even stupider "journalists" from the networks.

Not surprising. He rails against the media in the last debate because he didn't like the questions, then goes on FOX. Hello? He then refuses a debate without that interference by all of a sudden saying there have been enough debates when surely based on the fact that the MSM staged bs debates this would be a chance to really let people hear what he didn't get to say in those bs debates. How hypocritical. If he can't even face Hillary Clinton one on one how is he going to do it in the WH?

166. Afraid? You're silly
After 21 debates what could they possibly debate over that hasn't already been debated a gazillion times?

To sum it up: In desperation your candidate (and you as well) are trying to use childish tactics right out of the Republican play book in a last ditch effort to get some free media time because she's broke, and the fact that she's lost shows that she and her die-hard followers are not just childish, but selfish to the point where they display a complete lack of respect toward the democrat party. That or either they display a complete disassociation with reality. One or the other.

Seriously, even a child could see right through Clinton and her die-hard follower's cheap desperate tactics. Why should Obama lower himself down to that level - especially when he's the winner?

BTW I am not an Obama supporter. I only supported Dennis Kucinich so I don't have any built in bias toward Hillery or Obama.

If you know about this subject "math" and you look at the amount of delegates left in the upcoming states and you figure out that Obama's delegate lead is insurmountable (sorry, big word...), you see that the contest is OVER. We just have to wait for Hillary to try to destroy Obama because she is selfishly looking at 2012 to run against McSame.

If you can illustrate how Hillary can win (without cheating), I'd like to see it.

I understand that you want Hillary to have the free air time, she needs it.

In each debate that I watched it was all old news or the moderators re-hashing shit that's been beat to death (for BOTH candidates). Nothing new comes out, the only purpose these debates serve is to let someone flip-flop on an issue that's been taking them down in the polls.

I think it's funny when Hillary supporters latch onto the MSMs new topic and run with it, there's usually a new one every couple of weeks. Reverend Wright!! Give us another debate!! Reverend Wright!! Debate debate debate!!
