I know you and O. claim "NO MORE" but this would be the best format yet...wish it had been thought of 20 debates ago...Absolutely, a one on one would show who knows foreign diplomacy and American economics the best...Not "wished for" but knowledge...Keep at the asking for this!

1. They should have done that months ago.

But who would sponsor such a thing? It wouldn't give any of the bloviating TV "journalists" a chance to take center stage, which is really why the networks take on these debates.

Anyhow, at this point there's no reason for another debate, regardless of format -- 21 is more than enough. And it would be a tactical mistake for Obama to let Hillary have the free TV time, since she can't afford to buy ads any more, like he can. Winners don't debate losers. There's no advantage to it.

9. I doubt if most Americans would sit through a true debate

in the style of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. No questions from reporters--and hours on each topic. If you've ever watched a re-enactment of a debate or a speech of the time (I saw the Cooper Union Speech re-enacted a couple years back), you'll realize that the way they constructed their arguments back then takes a lot more time than what they do now. No sound bites--but a lot of intricate prose and logic woven together. When you realize that the Lincoln-Douglas debates took place outdoors with the audience standing the whole time, you have to marvel at the patience and stamina of our forefathers.

IIRC, their debates were 2.5 hours long. One spoke for an hour, then the other spoke for an hour, then the first speaker got 30 minutes to sum up. The next debate they switched who went first.

I'm trying to imagine modern day Americans sitting still for all that...

There are still stories of how my great great grandfather, a blacksmith and his family would ride and walk into the county seat in Central Illinois and listen to Lincoln's speeches.

to hear the debates, and that many walked several miles to get there....a different breed of folks back then. Most didn't have the education that we have today, either, but I do believe they valued education more. It meant something to be able to write a proper sentence or to follow a logical argument. Perhaps it was because of lack of books and schools that these folks really listened to speeches and honed their arguments over issues--this was the only way many learned. Lincoln himself had about six months of formal schooling, and his story was not the exception, but rather the rule in those times, I think.
