Hillary Strangelove: Saudis call Hillary's Iran threat "politics of the madhouse"
The Boston Globe takes Hillary to task for her comments on obliterating millions of men, women, and children in Iran.

And they quote the Saudis -- who take a dim view of her comments.

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2008/04/27/hillary_strangelove/?p1=email_to_a_friend">Hillary Strangelove

Being neighbors of Iran, the Saudis and the other Gulf Arabs have the most to fear from Iran's nuclear program and its drive to become the dominant power in the Gulf.

But precisely because they are most at risk from Iran's regional ambitions, the Saudis want a carefully considered American approach to Iran, one that balances firmness and diplomatic engagement.

The Saudi paper called Clinton's nuclear threat "the foreign politics of the madhouse," saying, "it demonstrates the same doltish ignorance that has distinguished Bush's foreign relations."

A presidential candidate who lightly commits to obliterating Iran - and, presumably, all the children, parents, and grandparents in Iran - should not be answering the White House phone at any time of day or night.

1. Maybe they're not to keen on the "fallout" caused by another country
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 09:39 AM by 4themind
Figuratively, and literally. They don't want a nuclear Iran, but if they get the weapon, they certainly don't want fallout coming into their country if their Neighbor is 'totally obliterated'. They probably also do not want to suffer the fallout among hardliners(think how Osama supposedly got inspired) who would stand to only gain more power.

2. This "obliterate" comment is big and why isn't it being talked about more?
Hillary just put herself in the same category as Ahmadinejad's Israel comment. Do we want another war hawk in the oval office? For the Saudis to compare her to GW is bad.

Thanks for bringing this up, we need to wonder what makes obliteration acceptable to a democratic candidate. We need a cool head who can look at the world as a place to keep instead of being destroyed.

Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 09:43 AM by npincus
They were ALL OVER Obama when he suggested America could target al Qaeda in Pakistan if we have actionable intelligence... which BTW, the US actually DID a few weeks later!!!

6. Powerful (to anyone employing working braincells)
(Hillary Clinton's ME policy) "demonstrates the same doltish ignorance that has distinguished Bush's foreign relations."

He's trying to explain it away and she's asking who the umbrella covers? He has no answer, just that she didn't mean it that way. Hmmmmmmm how did she mean it?

9. A frightening quote and a scary look at her "inner hawk"...(please read)
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 11:00 AM by Kristi1696
Which is increasingly become more front-and-center.

Here's the more terrifying and reckless part of the quote:

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacks Israel)."

Notice that "if it attacks Israel" is in PARENTHESES! Her exact quote is:

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran".

WHAT.THE.FUCK.

After that gaffe, defeating Hillary may just be a matter of national security.

10. I long for the more innocent days of "bombing back into the Stone Age"
The cavalier nature of Clinton's comment is more chilling to me than some of the whacko stuff we heard from General Curtis LeMay. Makes the Vietnam-era saber rattling sound almost quaint in comparison. I never thought I'd say that.

16. True Majority has that float of McCain riding the missile, perhaps they need another.
Just kidding on the HRC float, but in all seriousness I condemn Hillary for her taunting statement. We need diplomacy NOT another war monger.

17. as an unaligned voter, I can honestly say, this was her worst mistake and potentially her last.
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 04:58 PM by frickaline
But if she defeats Obama in the primary I will likely still vote for her knowing that McCain will do worse than she would be capable of.

19. This is one BIG reason I've supported Obama
I knew way out when this contest first started that if it were Hillary vs. any Repub we'd have months of campaigning ratcheting up the War rhetoric into dangerous territory. I was depressed just thinking about it. I supported both Edwards and Obama for precisely this reason.

20. I agree with the Saudis...
"foreign politics of the madhouse"

"same doltish ignorance that has distinguished Bush's foreign relations"

Too bad our media is too stuck on stupid to focus on real issues.

Recommended.
