Sorry. I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't enjoy yelling |
|
Well I gotta be honest.
I appreciated the message of Rev. Wright. But the shrieking grated on me.
Lemme make it clear. I also don't like being in a sports bar when white guys are yelling at the TV "OH YEAH! TOUCHDOWN!!! Wo-Wo-Wo-Wo-Wo!!"
Nor do I appreciate WWE Wrestlers yelling.
I loves my Rock and Roll, but I don't like Rockers who yell.
Politically, I love a rousing speech. But not yelling.
I love listening to the old speeches of Martin Luther King. Those rolling tones get me every time.
I'm just hoping voters who aren't predisposed to Obama don't get turned off by the volume.

Just thought your response was hysterical the way you said it...very funny (not being sarcastic or anything...just laughed aloud here).
anyway, i guess i should add some meat to your OP....the style of delivery is just that, a style of delivery...like a style of music....you just learn to love different styles and appreciate the colors of the rainbow...
For me, i love all types of music including: Hip Hop, R&B, Alternative Rock, Heavy metal (Black - Metalica is still the greatest), Pop, Classical Orchestra, Symphonic Film soundtracks (James Newton Howard and Thomas Newman y'all!!), Mexican music (Thalia just blew me away when i first heard her), and New Wave (OMG -- check out Adiemus I to IV -- hint: they made that famous Delta Airlines sound..Youtube --> "delta adiemus", you wont be disappointed).
My point being is that of those musical styles of mine i go in with a different understanding and appreciation and from it i gain alot more!

... the op made a reasonable non-inflammatory comment.
Religiosity at any volume is not something worth listening to. IMO
I am sure there are many rational and reasonable Obama atheists (and believers)who agree.
You are welcome to the ranters (of any persuasion.)

|
I don't like a lot of yelling either, in some circumstances, but I CAN yell my head off at football and baseball games. :)
The Rev's speech didn't bother me, but I like that kind of preachin', as long as there is substance to it, and it's not a bunch of ignorant, hate-filled stuff (THAT kind of yelling, I don't like either.)

as do many Baptist preachers. It may not be your style but that's a personal choice.
And anyone who would vote against Obama because they don't like his preacher's preaching style, well . . .

|
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 06:36 AM by EffieBlack
He just didn't do it in his most famous speeches - maybe that's why they became famous, since they didn't turn some people off.
But MLK did indeed at times use the same preaching technique as Rev. Wright and many other black ministers, becoming very impassioned and "yelling" at the 3/4 point in the sermon. He tempered his style in his public speeches - for obvious reasons (if you think Rev. Wright turns off some white people in 2008, imagine the reaction of white folks to a loud Dr. King in 1965 - he scared them to death even when he didn't raise his voice!)

Hell, I learned things I didn't know tonight from Wright. He's a man that gets one thinking.

|
Well said.
Many of your other fellow supporters have posted similar thoughts lately, and it reflects well on the group.
People need to also beware of the overt cadences of religious oration, too: many of us CAN'T STAND it, and it is an impediment. There's still a very good chance he'll get the nomination, and if so, I hope he and his supporters can avoid the messianic thrillfest that I've seen far too much of already. It's a turn-off to lots of us.

|
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 10:23 PM by BeyondGeography
What I saw was pretty low key by comparison. If it gets to you, come back to the text: Different is not deficient. I'm an old Euro at heart and I like it quiet, too. That doesn't mean there's only one way to reach people.
I find the man to be incredibly compelling...did anyone hear when he swung from cantata to the blues? That was beautiful; he has an ear for both, and he clearly enjoys beauty wherever he finds it. Life's too short, our common predicament too precarious, not to appreciate all that is good in humankind. I feel that's what he's about, and that, like Obama, he's a man after my own heart when all is said and done.

Actually, one of the things I like about Obama is that he has a pretty quiet demeanor - although he's an excellent orator and knows how to use his voice to work a crowd, I get the impression that he's most comfortable with quiet conversation or expressing his thoughts in writing.

you weren't a Kool-Aid drinker Armstead, but an Edwards suporter.
You're all so busy trying to prove your non-racist bona fides because you support a safe Black candidate, when you never did anything to fight racism personally, that your "slip" is showing where the rubber hits the road. See how uncomfortable you get when a real Black man speaks?

72. Somebody makes an honest post about their general aversion to screaming and you have to |
|
play the race card.
You are the one who just called Obama a "safe" black man and J. Wright a "real" black man. Tend to the plank in your own eye.

73. You ought to re-read my post |
|
I was simply discussing on a discussion board my own reaction to Wright.
It's not about race. It's about yelling and style and a message that I didn't think was presented in a very compelling way. Hells Bells, I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X when I was 16. Now that was some heavy duty confrontation of the dirty laundry of racism. So Wright hardly scared me off on that basis.
And your blanket statement is presumptuous because you know nothing about what I have or haven't done to combat racism in my own life.
Excuse me now, my Kool Aid glass is low and I have to refill it. :)

I've never been in a black church. I grew up in one of the most radical conservative holiness churches in american, and I've heard plenty yelling and screaming year in and year out.

75. I'm with you on the yelling by a speaker, such as a pastor, |
|
as it makes me feel uncomfortable, but I love sports, so yelling at sporting events on TV in the sports bar is A-OK with me!
On a side note, I called my credit card company a few days ago, not knowing that I'd misdialed by one number, didn't hear the usual intro but didn't pick up on exactly what was being said in the intro, entered my secret code when asked for it, and got "YOU HAVE ENTERED AN INVALID CODE. PLEASE RE-ENTER THE CORRECT CODE!!!! at top volume! It was scary! I ended the call, half expecting to get a knock at my door and getting taken away, never to be seen again!

on your computer. It's not like you were at the event. Just another manufactured issue not addressing anything of substance. "He's yelling when he's speaking!" Turn the volume down.

77. In the break room at work, people were talking to the TV saying "Sit down & shut up!" |
|
This was strictly during the introduction by Rev. Wendell Anthony. I think he is going to have some sore throat in the morning :) but yes, for those not familiar with the whole situation, the shrieking was not a popular outreach mechanism.
Now I'm sure I'll be told to "get the fuck used to it", but there it is.

I notice you're attacking me and not the argument. Don't you find it strange that you're complaining that somebody was too loud on your television set? See that down arrow by the word 'volume'? Put it to use. Never used a remote control before or something?
Just admit it. You realize how dumb it is to complain that somebody is yelling on your TV set. Your real complaint is something else, but you're just masking it with a complaint about how loud your TV is.
These are the big boy threads. You need to come armed with better arguments next time. If you do respond, please let us know why you didn't turn down the volume on the TV if it was so loud.

But then even supporters have different perspectives like you and I. When I was young, I remember people from different faiths visiting our church on occasion and found themselves in culture shock because the evangelical style of preaching gets LOUD and very excited and they were used to their more docile Baptist preacher.
When I used to attend church all those years ago, I kinda' liked it. Listening to a preacher drone on in a monotonous voice is a call for a snoozefest. So I guess it's just what we're taught, and have grown accustomed to. I think it'll be more "jarring" to people who are agnostic or atheist if they've never had the opportunity to attend a church of this type or even hear a sermon preached louder than most Baptist and Catholic religions preach. Hopefully they won't judge him by his tenor but by his words.

sorry, my ear is more attuned to NPR level of speech. I pretty much HATE charismatic churches, preachers who use vitriolic hyperbole..regardless of their politics or skin color. I have been crossing my fingers this won't have a deep effect on Obama..but whoknows.

I don't mind his message but his delivery bothers me. Its way to Hollywood sensationalist. I like facts, not emotions.
I start to feel manipulated and not educated when the delivery is in this format, and that's a definite turn-off.
