Just so you know...to hear the things that Wright said tonight
You'd have to be in a college history, religion or political science class.

The kinds of connections he made tonight are the stuff that MA colloquiums and seminars are made of.

His speech this evening was not trivial. Neither was it "controversial" unless you find educated, researched, in-depth social discourse "controversial".

That's all.

we would be living a different existence in America.

A post I made on an earlier thread....

4. Yep. I recognized it from grad school. Differences are also valuable because
they are what makes it possible for the Whole to be greater than the sum of its parts.

If everyone were the same, or if we were uniformly perfect, we'd be sterile, no creativity, no potentiality, nothing new.

6. I was very impressed too - a great combination of intellect, enthusiasm and humor
I never thought I'd see nuanced discussions of ethnomusicology on national TV - and as it's a subject about which I know a good deal, I can vouch for the accuracy of his remarks. I was also pretty impressed with his delivery of them, which was both witty and practical. I had a good laugh when he chided the mostly black audience for thinking all the white people were clapping out of time :-)

8. Now that we have seen a complete speech of Rev Wright,
is it any surprise that someone of Barack Obama's intellect would be responsive to a individual with such depth and insight. This was truly a remarkable speech and experience.

11. No. I didn't mean that it was over anyone's head
I meant that it is of great substance (stuff that is discussed at the graduate level) and NOT "controversial".

12. I don't think you need a degree to understand the speech.. You do need
education and analytical/ critical thinking skills, a knowledge of a dictionary, and an open heart/ mind. You are correct, normally in America it would take a masters to achieve this knowledge... a lot of "new" teachers in America would not even understand this speech.

15. I'm not saying you need a degree...I'm saying we
haven't seen this kind of language, in depth, serious talk on the tee-vee. And what he said was in no way "controversial".

to college, but I'm fairly well informed about many things. I found Rev. Wright's speech about the differences in learning, language, and music fascinating.

Just making the statement that I didn't go to college so never got to hear this kind of information. Fascinating stuff, though. ;-) And it is the kind of stuff they SHOULD put on TV.

18. ***To HEAR these things...not to UNDERSTAND them***
To HEAR these things that Wright said tonight one would usually be in an academic setting. Not to say that what he said is over peoples heads. Folks in this thread are misunderstanding my OP.

22. well, of course, to read the things you said in your OP tonight
You'd have to be in a sociology, history, or political economy class at a University.

You get a lot of controversial stuff in places like that :P

I knew what you meant right away. You didn't say a word about the education level of any readers, just the content of the presentation. Just goes to show how easily people can misinterpret well intentioned words.
