I recognize that electing a Black man may be symbolic, but it isn't sufficient.
I'm an immigrant who's lived here since the later part of my childhood, but I feel very vested in this conversation, as much as AAs are.
All of us immigrants, regardless of color, owe a debt of gratitude to AAs in this country. I don't look down on them, nor feel superior due to some imagined "immigrant work ethic". Our success is built not just on the backs of our parents who brought us to this country, but also on the backs of AAs, Irish, Italians, Jews and others who came before us and were each in turn disenfranchised.
I think the battle that Rev Wright is waging against the media's caricature of him is legitimate, even though I disagree with a few of his points. Some things are not to be compromised. While your image, via Rev Wright, is being mocked and belittled, I think
now is the time for the rest of us progressives to stand with you, not give you a promise to come back and deal with this after the election.
