ASHEVILLE – Sen. Hillary Clinton told a raucous and inspired Asheville crowd Thursday that as commander in chief she would end the war in Iraq while enacting universal health care and reviving a faltering economy.

Flanked by retired generals and with a backdrop reading “Solutions for a Strong Military,” the former first lady was repeatedly interrupted by standing ovations with thunderous applause inside the Asheville Civic Center’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.

One such outburst came with her pledge to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 60 days of becoming president.

“We must restore our moral authority around the world. That begins by ending the war in Iraq,” she said. “I will begin withdrawing our troops, and I will tell the Iraqis they must step up.”

Some 2,500 people packed the auditorium while hundreds more couldn’t get in. Attendees waived signs reading, “Welcome Madam Future President,” “Asheville Loves Hillary” and “Rural Country = Clinton Country.”

Chelsea Clinton mingles with crowd

Dale Neal and Carol Motsinger • dneal@ashevill.gannett.com • published April 28, 2008 12:15 am

The Clinton family seems to have taken a liking to Asheville.

Three days after Sen. Hillary Clinton brought her presidential campaign to the Civic Center — and a month after former President Bill Clinton stumped for his wife at Asheville High — their daughter Chelsea Clinton came to town Sunday to attend church and meet with supporters.

After morning service at Central United Methodist Church downtown, she fielded questions about her mother’s positions at a movie theater.

“I’m so proud of both of my parents, but nothing would make me more proud than for my mom to be my president,” she said to supporters at Cinebarre theater at Biltmore Square Mall.
…………………

A Clinton supporter at the theater asked which would be more historic — electing the nation’s first woman president or the first African-American president.

“I think we’re making history by having this conversation,” Chelsea Clinton replied.

“We don’t want Obama. We want your mama,” another supporter yelled.
………..

GRAHAM, N.C. - Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday criticized Barack Obama for opposing the concept of suspending the gas tax during the peak summer driving months, ……..

………….

Obama does not support the "gas tax holiday" and has said the average motorist would not benefit significantly from such a suspension; by some estimates, the federal government would lose about $10 billion in revenue.

"My opponent, Senator Obama, opposes giving consumers a break," Clinton said, campaigning in North Carolina. "I understand the American people need some relief."

Clinton said she would make up the difference in revenue by imposing a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies.

"If we suspended it and made up the lost revenues, that's the best of both worlds," she said.

Bill Clinton to visit 11 cities in N.C.

The Associated Press • published April 27, 2008 2:22 pm

Clinton officials said Sunday that he will campaign for his wife, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, in Boone, Wilkesboro, Elkin and Mount Airy on Tuesday. He'll then visit Apex, Sanford, Lillington, Dunn, Hope Mills, Lumberton and Whiteville on Wednesday.

Those stops will come after Hillary Clinton's own two-day tour of North Carolina. Along with her visit in Wilmington on Sunday night, she has stops in Graham, Salisbury, Concord and Charlotte on Monday……..

APNewsBreak: Gov. Easley to endorse Clinton **NORTH CAROLINA**

By GARY D. ROBERTSON and BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writers 28 minutes ago

RALEIGH, N.C. - Gov. Mike Easley will endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, The Associated Press has learned.

Easley was expected to announce the endorsement Tuesday morning in Raleigh, the state capital, one week before North Carolina's primary on May 6, according to persons close to the governor and to Clinton. The individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not yet been made.

Easley is a Democratic superdelegate who has served two terms as governor. His decision comes despite several recent polls showing Clinton trailing rival Barack Obama ahead of the state's May 6 primary.

The endorsement is a major boost for the former first lady. Besides being a respected figure among Democrats in the state, Easley is one of the all-important superdelegates likely to choose the party's presidential nominee........

Just because the Right and ABC cares so much about Rev. Wright doesn't mean the rest of the country gives a damn.

Though it's interesting that Hillary supporters parrot the Right's talking points so diligently - after all, isn't the Right supporting Hillary's candidacy?

Commentary

For months now, political pundits on the 24-hour cable news channels have had a field day with Bill Clinton, debating whether the former president was helping or hurting wife Hillary's campaign for president. After Bill Clinton's swing through East Central Indiana, including Hartford City and New Castle on Sunday, there is no doubt that Bill is the best weapon in Hillary's arsenal when it comes to small town and rural Indiana.

The first visit by a former president was an historic event for Hartford City and drew hundreds who stood for hours to get into the 4-H Building at the Blackford County Fairgrounds.

37. Clinton's shameless hypocrisy on the fuel tax

Clinton's shameless hypocrisy on the fuel tax

by kos Mon Apr 28, 2008 at 11:56:50 AM PDT

Clinton today:

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday criticized Barack Obama for opposing the concept of suspending the gas tax during the peak summer driving months, a plan both she and Republican John McCain have endorsed.

The idea to suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day was first proposed by McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee, as a way to ease the economic burden for consumers during the summer....

Clinton in June 2000

Campaigning in the Hudson Valley, Lazio continued a two-day assault on Clinton's support of maintaining the 18-cent federal gas tax and then used tough rhetoric to declare that "trust" and "character" were campaign issues during an evening fundraiser in Manhattan that raised more that $1 million.

Clinton, meanwhile, lashed out at Lazio's plan to repeal 4.3 cents of the gas tax, calling it "a bad deal for New York and a potential bonanza for the oil companies...."
...

Honestly, why take the 18 cents out of the federal budget? Why not take it out of the oil company profits? The $10 billion in revenue the federal government would lose, at a time when our roads are crumbling and bridges literally collapsing, is only a quarter of Exxon Mobil's annual profits:

78. “He’s a fine talker, but we need substance.”
Sharon Watts, 57, of Jupiter, brought her mother, Lois Watts, 83, to the theater Sunday. Sharon Watts wanted to complete a trifecta of signatures on her Hillary placard, which already boasted the signatures of President Bill Clinton, who visited Asheville on March 28, and Sen. Clinton, who campaigned at the Civic Center on Thursday.

Sharon Watts liked the specificity of Clinton’s proposals. “Obama doesn’t say what he’s going to do,” she said. “He’s a fine talker, but we need substance.”

After listening to Chelsea Clinton’s polished delivery, the Wattses said they wouldn’t be surprised if a third Clinton would be running for president in a few decades.

This just underscores how amazing it is that Hillary Clinton has been unable to seal the deal...when she started out as a frontrunner, had a former President husband campaigning for her, a daughter with high name recognition. . .

Well, I think the first step toward "relief" at this point would be for Hillary Clinton to just shut up. It does not serve this party - nor this country - for a candidate to so obviously pander. . .and it is increasingly obvious to me that this is a media election - not an election for the American people.

The crowd cheered wildly when she said that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care.

“I’m the only candidate left in the race with a plan for universal health care,” she said.

Clinton also pledged to institute universal pre-kindergarten classes, end the federal No Child Left Behind education law, and expand grants and low-interest loans to attend college.

“We are slamming the door to college for too many middle-class families who can’t afford it,” she said.

Sandra Tolley, of Madison County, a teacher for 32 years, agreed with Clinton’s plan to do away with No Child Left Behind. It has forced students to become only test-takers, Tolley said.

“A new approach is needed in education,” she said. “We have not been getting students ready for the 21st century and being competitive.”

Obama Forgets Writing on Gun Questionnaire

April 17, 2008 12:13 AM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Talal Al-Khatib Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., maintained at Wednesday's ABC News debate in Philadelphia that his handwriting does not appear on a 1996 questionnaire stating support for a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns. The Democratic presidential frontrunner made this claim even though a copy of the original document suggests otherwise.

"No, my writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire, Charlie. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," said Obama.

The Illinois Democrat made his remarks after ABC News' Charlie Gibson told Obama: "In 1996, your campaign issued a questionnaire, and your writing was on the questionnaire that said you favored a ban on handguns."

The questionnaire, which was filled out for an organization called "Independent Voters of Illinois - Independent Precinct Organizations," appears to have Obama's handwriting on the first page plus a typewritten answer to the gun question on the last page.

Read the questionnaire with the handwriting here.

Read an accompanying story from Politico here.

The questionnaire asked: "Do you support state legislation to: ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns?"

Obama's campaign answered: "Yes."

...

Obama's response to an earlier 1996 questionnaire from the same group has the same statement of support for a sweeping ban on handguns.

http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080425/POLITICS01/80425004/1223/POLITICS

84.  “Obama doesn’t say what he’s going to do,”--seems voters know O. is no substance

35. Exactly. When McCain made that stupid tax holiday announcement
most people I know laughed hysterically...figuring 18 cents would wipe out. . .one week's gas price increase.

Both McCain and Hillary seem to have no clue about what is going through the minds of the American people. They know the government is nearly bankrupt - they know they can't afford food and fuel. They know something constructive needs to be done (and they also know that stupid-ass Republican tax "rebate" economic stimulus package was as dumb as the Katrina gift cards). This is the biggest problem with the people the media selects for us to serve in government - too many of them have the analytical ability of a grade school child and the emotional maturity of a middle school bully.

48. What Clinton said in June 2000 about Lazio's plan to repeal 4.3 cts of gas tax:

22. Hey hillary, the reason we are paying so much for energy and food is because you voted for the IWR
Maybe you don't GET IT

What would removing the gasoline tax really do. Would the outrageous profits from the oil companies disappear? How much savings do you think it would really impact.

For the past eight years we have been throwing most of our money into a war machine, and very little money into alternative energy sources

Gee wilikers mrs clinton, you helped create the the problem by voting for the damn war

and over 20 Democrats and 1 Senator knew it was, and that effectively removing the War Powers Act which is what the IWR did, took the check and balance away from Congress

How much do you want to bet that WHOEVER becomes president, they will try to repeal the IWR?

I'll bet you a soda it won't happen. All the unitary power that CONGRESS ESSENTIALLY GAVE TO THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH, will be used and abused by subsequent administrations from either side

92. You know that how?
I would think it was stupid and I would be confused as to why he would pander like that. But he doesn't pander like that, which is why I support him. Even Clinton-lover Paul Krugman says it is a horrible idea, except he just bashes McCain for proposing it and doesn't address the fact that Clinton proposes the same thing.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/28/opinion/28krugman.html

If truth be told, the McCain tax plan doesn’t seem to embody any coherent policy agenda. Instead, it looks like a giant exercise in pandering — an attempt to mollify the G.O.P.’s right wing, and never mind if it makes any sense.

The impression that Mr. McCain’s tax talk is all about pandering is reinforced by his proposal for a summer gas tax holiday — a measure that would, in fact, do little to help consumers, although it would boost oil industry profits.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/28/candidates-shift-on-the-gas-tax/

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today endorsed a plan to suspend the 18.4-cents-a-gallon tax on gasoline, but in the past she has supported the levy. During a 2000 Senate race debate in New York City, she spoke out against the plan of her opponent, Rick Lazio, to repeal the tax.

One of my fundamental disagreements during this campaign with my opponent was when he called for the repeal of the gas tax. Now, the gas tax is one of those few taxes that New York actually gets more money from Washington than we send. And we are totally reliant on it to do things like finishing I-86 in the Southern Tier, or the fast-ferry harbor works up in Rochester, as well as the work we need to do here in the city.

Even Hillary thinks it's a bad idea. But she'll say anything to get votes. And fortunately for her there are enough gullible voters out there to fall for her shtick. I hope this post will help convince you of how much of a brazen liar and panderer your candidate is.

60. A very silly idea, pure politics, absolutely no sense...
One reason gas prices jump in the summer is that people drive more. At that point demand goes up. Since we don't have any more oil or refinery capacity to meet the additional demand there's only one possible result (at least in our economy) - prices go up.

Now, reduce gas prices. What is likely to happen? That's right, people drive more, demand goes up even further and prices go right back up. Either that or there will be shortages and long lines at the pumps like we haven't seen for decades. About the only beneficiaries of the tax cut will be the big oil companies and the oil producing states.

This is not high policy, this is Econ 101. Don't fall for it.

Analysis: Wright puts Obama on defensive
Posted 17min ago

By Chuck Raasch, Gannett News Service

WASHINGTON — If the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. thought he was unfairly caught in sound-bite purgatory before, his appearance Monday at the National Press Club gave doubters and critics plenty to chew on in the coming days.
And in the process, he put his one-time congregant, Sen. Barack Obama, further on the political defensive.

>
Now, as Obama struggles to close out his party's nomination, his message of hope and reconciliation on race and politics has a competing framework, that of the far less conciliatory rhetoric of Wright.

Wright, for example, did not back down, for instance, from assertions that the United States government was responsible for introducing AIDS into the black community.

Wright's re-emergence comes at a precipitous point for Obama.
>

Obama's campaign tried to pre-empt Wright's appearance, sending out surrogates like chief strategist David Axelrod, who complained about the amount of media attention on Wright.

What horrible thing will happen as a result?

This plays, in the population that has not, or has only had very little, of the Obama Kool-aid, as if Hillary is doing everything she can to help the poor and working poor, while Obama says they can continue to suck it up.

Frankly, I'm sure many drivers, most Americans, especially those who use great volumes of gas for work - owner-operator truck drivers, for example, are hearing her, and hearing Obama, and they will side with Hillary.

can't make ends meet have it a tad easier.

Even if it amounts to just 10 cents a gallon, it will help many.

Hillary has a plan to solve our energy dependence.

This would not be a watershed solution, but a hand to those most hurt by the rising cost of everything.

Besides, I believe she is referring to the federal gas tax, not individual state gas taxes.

167. Hillary Clinton Visits Wilmington---listen to her speech:
Hillary Clinton Visits Wilmington
Peter Biello

WILMINGTON, NC (2008-04-27) Democratic Presidential Candidate Senator Hillary Clinton made a campaign stop in Wilmington last night.

With the Battleship North Carolina as her backdrop, Senator Clinton railed against the Bush administration, criticizing everything from President Bush's ties to the oil industry to the war in Iraq.

Clinton says the Iraq war has so far been a political failure and that she'll start pulling one to two brigades out of Iraq within the first two months of her presidency.

"We will tell the Iraqis that now it is their responsibility, because they've had a blank check until now, and they have failed and refused to make the tough decisions that they have to make."

Clinton will visit three more cities in North Carolina on Monday.

While berating "Bush's" Iraq War she voted for? Man, she IS shameless.

188. The only "RW" thing going on here is Hillary's shameless emulation of it.
And the bizarre approval she's receiving for it from dem supporters who can't see or won't acknowlege it at any cost. That's the sad, hard, scary truth.

Over and out.

149. neither are going to be in power untill jan 2009
hillary will have to get the house and senate to to pass a windfall profits tax and that would take well in the summer of 2009. so in one year we may have a few cents taken off the price of gasoline. i think the smart thing to do in the next year is to drive slower and get a few more miles per gallon...but it does`t sound as good as getting a big tax break from the oil companies who by 2009 will have no profits to tax or they will incorperate in the middle east..or china

153. The people who oppose a gas tax holiday are as out of touch as their hero
No wonder they think Obama is electable. They probably think Rev. Wright is electable.

She would pay for the gas tax holiday with a windfalls profit tax on oil companies. This would not harm transportation funding.

181.  “Obama doesn’t say what he’s going to do,”
Sharon Watts, 57, of Jupiter, brought her mother, Lois Watts, 83, to the theater Sunday.

Sharon Watts, 57, of Jupiter, brought her mother, Lois Watts, 83, to the theater Sunday.

201. Posts like these are why you will see little of Hillary and Obama supporters on DU working together.
For anything. Ever.

I will work hard to help Obama if he becomes the nominee (though I am not so deluded to think he will likely win). But I certainly won't work with the very people who spouted the most vile, disgusting hatred that I have ever seen on a Democratic message board.

206. What's wrong with my post?
It's only the most reasonable thing to do. I've never called Hillary supporters names (look it up) or was even nasty towards anyone.

What will you do when Obama's officially the nominee (and he will be)?

I've seen the same of Hillary supporters, they've been nasty as well. I can work with them to get Obama elected.
