I won't give up on Obama. Not now, and not ever.
My mom has a friend who voted for Obama in New Jersey and supported him enthusiastically, but now wonders if he made a mistake, because he fears Obama is unelectable. I met a few people in North Carolina who had decided to vote for Clinton because of electability concerns, and we've seen at least 2 DUers switch their allegiance in the past couple weeks because they got nervous about electability. I admit that I myself have wavered at times, getting nervous that this country just might not be ready to see beyond the media BS and overcome our prejudices. But when I thought about it, I realized that the unelectable label becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy, one that I and other Dean supporters fell victim to four years ago when we became demoralized and gave up.

Over the past few weeks, we've seen a vicious cycle with regard to the electability meme. The media starts beating up Obama and questioning his ability to appeal to white voters, particularly the white working class. This makes more white voters get skittish about his electability, and thus, polls show him doing worse in the primary among white voters. The polls showing Obama doing poorly with white voters makes more people skittish about his electability, causing a further erosion in support.

The racial aspect of this might be a new twist, but the vicious cycle of a candidate's support dropping as people perceive him/her to be unelectable is nothing new. We saw it happen four years ago with Dean, and once we stepped back and looked at it rationally, most of us realized the media had made a big deal out of nothing, just as they are doing now by beating the Reverend Wright crap to death.

So, fellow Obama supporters, I beg you, do not give up. Do not make the mistake we made four years ago when we let the media bring down Dean. Redouble your efforts, and as tough as it is, try not to get demoralized. Stay motivated to stay active. Donate, phone bank, travel to a primary state if you can. I went to North Carolina for the weekend to volunteer, in part because I decided I'd rather keep my mind off the national news by doing something for the campaign. Four years ago, after Dean started to implode I couldn't motivate myself to keep volunteering. This time, I am pledging not to get discouraged, because I believe in Obama and the promise he offers for this country, and no media manufactured controversy is going to to weaken my resolve to keep fighting for him.

So who's with me?

The media wants to have that kind of power over our country. But it is our country, and they shouldn't have that kind of power.

It is not only about standing next and behind Barack, it is also the only way we can get into the White House, because Hillary Clinton can't do it for us. She can't do it because too many will not vote for her. The damage has already been done. She is the one who is unelectable.

Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 08:06 PM by CakeGrrl
I'm tired of letting the wrong people take control of the message, and the Clinton campaign has learned at the feet of the Republicans. If Obama still has what I believe is a chess strategy in place, great, but his campaign needs to remember that a lot of people are easily led by bullshit and lies, and they need the truth laid out for them quickly and plainly and clearly. I don't know how many easily-scared Democrats are buying the Clinton "electability" b.s., but Obama needs to make sure they don't siphon too many voters away.

I've seen too much of Hillary's dirty work to ever be swayed into switching over, and it's discouraging how many people seem to be so easily cowed by bluff and bluster.

10. The ridiculous thing about the electability argument is the alternative.
Hillary Clinton?? If electability is your standard for supporting someone, she's the last person you should support. Try to get Edwards back in the race or try to get Gore to run. Then you might have a reasonable argument. But however much the media tries to "Dean Scream" Obama, he'll still be more electable than Hillary.

77. That is an understatement. There is enough dirt on Hillary for the GOP to...
bring up a different issue every day between now and election day and still not run out of things to talk about. The only reason we aren't hearing about all of that right now is because Obama doesnt want to win that way. But I assure everyone that McCain and the GOP have no issues with winning that way.

131. That's for sure. And if they ever do run out of things to say about Hillary they just
start in on Bill.

This is why Fox, McCain, Bill Kristol, Scaife and all the rest love Hillary now. If she doesn't get the nomination all their hard work goes down the drain.

For some reason Hillary supporters all of a sudden think that Fox, Kristol, Scaife and the rest of what is now the MSM are fair and balanced. The short-sightedness is just stunning.

12. You have been listening too much to the MSM. After the Pa. primary
that is all these clowns have been pushing

Let me relate some facts for you

1. The MSM told us that Iraq had WMDS
2. The MSM told us that their was a link between Iraq and 9/11
3. The MSM told us that Saddam gave sanctuary and support to AQ
4. The MSM told us about 9 months ago Hillary would be the nominee
5. The MSM told us that oil wouldn't go over 45 dollars a barrel
6. The MSM told us that oil wouldn't go over 60 dollars a barrel
7. The MSM told us that oil wouldn't go over 75 dollars a barrel
8. The MSM told us that oil would NEVER break 100 dollars a barrel
9. The MSM told us that there is no inflation
10. The MSM told us that mccain would not be the republican nominee over 9 months ago
11. The MSM told us that the republicans would capture both houses of Congress in 2006

The media is now telling us who is and isn't electable? Who made them judge and jury, and with a record like they have, I wouldn't bet on them

Hillary was ahead in PA by about 25 points, she ended up winning by 10 points, not quite the victory the MSM predicted

The truth is Hillary, and much of the Democratic party was run by the DLC and carvilles who are watching their power being taken away from them, and they won't go down easy, but they will fall, people are hurting, and they want a change, not the same old politicians who have done nothing for them but help create mega merges, bankrupcy laws, and illegal wars

19. With all due respect, why are you prematurely concerned about his demise?
Some of you loyal Obama supporters are confusing me.

Are ya buying into the hyperbole from the corporate media whores?

Obama has WON - thats WON the pledged delegate count. It would take a disaster of unprecedented proportions for the SuperD's to do something they NEVER have done - pull off a coup. Howard Dean + DNC knows that would = a loss in the GE and millions of disillusioned Dems walking away from the party in disgust.

As pres, Obama will need to weather far worse then the exaggerated slander the pukes are trying to pin on him because of Wright.

Please don't even put this desperate energy out there - our candidate is winning!!!!

Lets offer up some optimism instead.

I'm seeing a few Obama folk boardering on hysteria and it makes no sense. This is not Fear factor.

Obama will make a great president and he is gonna seal the deal by May 20th. :applause:

All the Clinton supporters are going nuts because the MSM is currently dumping on Obama, and that's their only hope: McSame/Clinton/MSM vs Obama.

Once the Dem horserace is over, the MSM will balance things out at least a bit - and Obama and the rest of the party can can start seriously punching back at McFlipflop.

I felt the need to chime it. I've followed this site for years, going back to supporting Howard Dean in 2004. I never warmed to John Kerry, and dread a Clinton dynasty run in 2008. Obama is a great candidate in my opinion, and I love old Rev. Wright. He is authenic as the day is long, charming and funny and largely right. I hope the people can see that through all the smoke and mirrors. Hans

I was a Dean "Texas Ranger" in 2004. I bussed to Iowa and flew to New Hampshire to campaign for him. I supported Kerry in the end, but only luke-warmly.... because, well, that was the kind of candidate he was.... luke warm. And I am sure you can tell by my sig pic how I feel about the Clinton "dynasty."

I think the whole Wright deal is being blown out of proportion (imagine that!). I never heard the man speak before the controversy, but I really enjoyed his NAACP speech, and didn't find it to be at all damning. If the press had an ounce of integrity, this wouldn't be an issue at all.

That Obama is the ONLY candidate right now who is having this "vetting" done. 55. For me, it is a matter of who is the better leader for our country and our party.
Senator Obama wins this hands down. I think this "Wright" issue has come to a head- better now than in the general election. The CW was that if it was snuffed out now it would be back then. So, this brings it all to a head once and for all. What more can the media spin? Wright is now being accused of being vain and selfish and going over the deep end. There is now an out for Obama. The pastor has thrown over Obama and now he is free to disassociate himself from him once and for all.

107. It doesn't matter if DU loses a couple of O supporters. All that matters is the real world,
and in the real world, Obama is the almost certain nominee. And after all, Obama picked up a US Senator today (Bingaman,) and I'd say that one Democratic Senator is worth at least two DU posters. And after the DU-ers withdrew their support for Obama, what did that make the breakdown at DU? It probably went from 75% pro Obama to 74.99%. So what's the big deal?

As far as the Wright issue goes, we've been through that already and Obama's numbers actually went up, not down, after the story broke. Look for a similar outcome this time.

If any Obamanite is thinking twice about Obama......he or she can keep on walking. It means you never wanted Obama as the next president. Undecided voters get on my last nerves. Obama is Obama. I'm not electing Rev. Wright. Nobody will change my opinion about Obama. If Obama would lose because of this.....it would end the *change* for the future. You better believe Al-Qaeda will get stronger. Americans don't really understand the position America is in at all.....

McClinton is giving Al-Qaeda more reasons for the global jihad. Obliterate, 100 year war are things Bin Laden is probably using right now to gain more support from his insane supporters. You folks do remember Osama Bin Laden? The tall skinny old dude who hates the western world.

Al-Qaeda has not been weaken by the western world. Hillary Clinton or John McCain are not the answer for a better future. If Hillary Rotten Clinton steals the nomination....I simply will not vote FOR her. I'm not going to be stupid and vote for McCain. I will make plans to move to another country. Sweden or Iceland sounds good.

The right wing is very quiet now hoping for it but I am POSITIVE they have smears of current girlfriends of Bill, videos of stuff Hillary has said over the years, and if you think they will stop like Obama did and not run them???

Obama just needs to come out now and say I tried to stand by my pastor for all the years I attended church but he has gone to far and I won't let his words follow me around and denounce the guy. It won't go quietly away.

But...to think Hillary is more electable is crazy...they have so much stuff on them and just can't wait to unveil it. That along with the fact most of us don't trust her or like her....

135. That's a really good point
When I was volunteering for Dean, my mom's friend (actually, the same friend who I mentioned in the OP) kept telling me Dean was McGovern 2.0. The one satisfying moment in an otherwise very dark November was being able to go up to him and hear him admit that he'd made a mistake, that Kerry wasn't so electable either, and that I was right when I had said the media would paint Kerry as an elitist Massachusetts liberal.

There's no way to know who's more electable...it all depends on how the candidates are defined and what the public mood is at the time of the election. Obama has run the better campaign thus far, and that's one measure that makes me more confident in his ability to run a general election campaign.

I realize that the "Obama is unelectable" talking point is being pimped by the GOP and their pigs in the Corporate media in order to get the Democratic Party to abandon a large constituency and give the nomination to Hillary by Super Delegate coup.

I also realize that Hillary is wallowing in the mud with the pigs cause that's the only chance she has of actually getting the nomination.

http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

Obama now leads McCain, still has an 8 point lead over Clinton, and his favorability is up since yesterday.

Remember that when the Wright story first broke in March, Obama's Rasmussen numbers took a BIG hit overnight.

144. I'm voting for Obama whether he's the nominee or not.
If Clinton steals the nomination, I'm writing in Obama this November.

I don't care. Obama earned my support, while Clinton earned my scorn and contempt. I will see to it she never gets elected to any office ever again. Her vile campaign has proved that she is unworthy of our trust.

This just goes to show what mindless, dittohead drones hardcore Obamabots are. You are jeopardizing our chances of winning by putting Person over Party. It's high time now to break up this cult!

157. If she gets the nomination, I'll vote for her.
I've said that before. But the point I was making was that Obama's supporters should not get skittish about his electability and abandon him the way we did with Dean 4 years ago, because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. The more people who perceive him as unelectable, the weaker he looks in the polls, and thus the more unelectable he looks.

160. OK then
Sounded to me like you'd even want to take the campaign to independent status and run Obama against Hillary in the general, were she to be the Democratic nominee.

161. Nah, that would be stupid
Obama has a future in the party even if he does not get the nomination this year. He'd throw it all away if he ran as an independent. If he did that (and I think the chances he would are less than 0), I'd probably be tempted to vote for him, but unless the Clinton campaign had pulled out of Virginia and she had no chance here I wouldn't. We need to put a Democrat in the White House no matter what.

159. Cult? Look y'all its the Cult meme
No crazier than the Clinton camps holding on even though they have lost. No crazier than 30% of Pennsylvania Clinton supporters saying they won't vote for Obama in the General.

Lighten up and join our Freedom Train.
