Breaking: Iowa superdelegate Richard Machaceck to endorse Obama

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080429/NEWS/80429020/-1/NEWS04

Winthrop farmer Richard Machaceck, an Iowa superdelegate, said today he is pledging to support Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Machacek, a member of the Democratic National Committee, had been uncommitted. He said he saw little difference between Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton on policy positions or ability.

Machacek, a Buchanan County Democrat also on the party's state central committee, said Obama's performance at Saturday's Democratic district conventions in Iowa tipped the balance in his favor.

Obama netted 16 of the 29 national convention delegates at stake in the state's five congressional districts, while Clinton received nine. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards received four delegates, having retained sufficient support in some districts despite leaving the race in January.

"I think it needs to be over, and in good conscience, I can't fly in the face of my precinct, county and district," Machacek told The Des Moines Register in a telephone interview. "The raw numbers coming out of the district conventions really sat me down hard."

5. If he gets 2 a day between now and the next primary...
he'll be within 5 delegates of Hillary's total. Impressive.

Is this the SDs' way of letting Hillary down easy?

33. :-) After all that-- what else is there left, finally? Seriously--
I like the way this writer put it:

"The attack on Wright is that it was set up in a way to make it look like the Reverend — a man whose entire career has been devoted to social justice — is a racist. That took a bit of maneuvering. In fact, the media, and their friends at the right-wing think tanks, had to dig through 15 years of Wright's sermons to find just the right snippets they needed to destroy Obama. Now that's determination!

http://www.counterpunch.org/whitney04282008.html

A GREAT analysis.

And our own Poll-Blind:

"So true, that. I am fascinated by the invisible machine responsible, say, that...
...literally poured over everything that Wright had ever said or written or published in his church bulletin. It's astounding to me, that kind of effort for someone who is only tangentially related to Obama.

In the same vein, Obama's every word both on and off camera (if it can be recorded) are scrutinized for any possible way to take them out of context and use them against him. The recording of Obama's "bitter" comment is a perfect example. Knowing this, it reassures me because they have to keep recycling Wright and other faux outrages because even with that level of scrutiny they can find so very little to exploit.

That's terribly impressive, considering the microscope he's under".

Obama is causing that Thing to run amok.

Before that, they were relegated to sifting thru his kindergarden essays.

They had to feel they'd struck pure gold.

Starting to seem it was fools' gold.

They keep saying this is the death of him and yet, the polls don't say that at all....

Amazing the level of denial on the Hill side of the isle....

Stand strong and support Obama.

The Superdelegates are JUST as disgusted with the nasty tactics as we are. AND they know who brings in the money, the new voters and the enthusiasm.

10. Terrific. I think among DNC members Obama will do very well...
because they endorse Dean's idea of a national campaign rather than the usual Democratic 20-state campaign. There will be a lot of DNC members who will say--which candidate will compete in MY state? and I think Obama will have an edge with them.

23. Go faster
ALL the thrice-damned superdelegates need to declare NOW, and end this thing!

And then the Democratic Party needs to get rid of superdelegates altogether. It's a broken, stupid system.

29. Actually, no. The pace is just right
By declaring one or two a day, they're staying under the radar. By the end of the primary season, it will be perceived that one of the states puts him over 2024, instead of the super delegates.

Very canny of them.;)

25. Obama has 9 new SD's since 4/20. Clinton has 3.
According to DemConWatch, the count for each on 4/20 was Clinton 255; Obama 230. With today's endorsements, it's now at Clinton 258 (+3); Obama 239 (+9). And the day is still young. So much for the new Wright controversy.

GObama!:bounce:

31. I wonder how many SDs have quietly decided to vote for Obama but are not
announcing it because they do not wish to be the target of negative feedback and pressure to switch from the Clinton campaign?

Obama by the end of the week.
