Obama v. Wright is brilliant. It really is. |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 01:20 PM by Wolsh
I swear, Obama is playing Chess while everyone else is playing Go Fish.
Here's how this works:
A. Obama knows, either from contacts with enough SD's or just his ability to do math that he has won the nomination. There is really no questioning this.
B. He knows that Wright will be a liability in November because they're friendly.
C. Reframe the debate as "Wright is his enemy who is trying to tear him down."
D. Wright becomes just another person who is on the attack. Every politician has to deal with these types of people.
E. Bingo, Bango, Obama is innoculated for the rest of the race, Wright becomes a null and actually could lead to a net gain by those who don't like attack politics.

I was nervous Friday night not being sure exactly he meant on Moyer's show. But he made it perfectly clear on Monday. It was so disappointing to see a man so full of himself, so egocentric, and so determined to go after Obama and put him down so he could lift himself up. He could have easily taken the opportunity to show America what he was about without attempting to destroy Obama.
Wright destroyed his own legacy in full view of world.

20. I think there's so much about this... |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 01:31 PM by TwoSparkles
...that we really don't know.
I posted yesterday about how I felt that the Wright situation felt incredibly orchestrated.
I still maintain that.
Why on Earth was Wright provided with three solid days of yammering that was covered non-stop by the mainstream media? It was as if someone provided him with a glaring opportunity to show America how unpleasant and radical he is.
Even the format was so generous. He gave a large speech and then answered pre-screened audience questions. He wasn't interviewed by the media. The media never had access to him. However, the media covered it all--from end to end. That's unusual. The media cuts in and out of speeches from Obama, Clinton and even the President.
I still feel today---despite all of the heartache and problems this has caused for Obama--that all of this has been orchestrated. I really do.
I think someone gave Wright a platform on purpose---because once his outrageous views were known--it would be easier for Obama to denounce Wright and cut him off for good.
Obama realized that he needed to do this--to wipe the slate clean for the rest of the IN/NC campaigns. Otherwise this distraction hobbles him. Furthermore, this also neutralizes the issue for the GE---and takes away Hillary's argument to the Superdelegates that Obama's Wright situation will kill him in the GE.
After denouncing him like this--the Republicans and McCain really have nowhere to go with this--because Obama made the distinction betweeen his views and Wright's and severed ties with him.

Twas a play within a play methinks, staged every step of the way.
What is confusing everyone is that it happened just before NC and Ind, but I think this was done with an eye towards the general election. Obama knows he's won the primaries so I think that is of little concern to him now. This show was for November. Doing it after the primaries would have looked too fake, too obvious. I think this guy is a genius.

and I think Wright was on board for it. I think he handed himself up on a silver platter for Obama to do what he needed to do. If Wright had said nothing new, Obama would need to stand by the statements he'd already made about Wright. But since Wright stepped up the rhetoric, Obama was able to come forward with a stronger statement, without apprearing to backtrack or flip flop. It was a reaction to something new, not something in the past. And it was probably directly related to ads the GOP had in the pipe. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if this was created as a way to rended a future GOP ad useless before it ever airs.

70. And it's entirely possible Wright "cooperated" |
|
I started wondering this morning if this was orchestrated. I think there is a closeness beween Obama and Wright that many will never understand. I cannot believe Wright would not want to see a man who identifies himself as African-American sitting in the Oval House. And if he had to make a supreme sacrifice in order to grease the wheels, I think he just might have been willing to do so.
This all remains to be seem; but in no way should we rule this premise out.

The Wright I saw on Bill Moyers was more in line with the Rev. Wright I know. Same goes for the Wright at the NAACP. But the Wright I viewed at the Press Club was not the Wright *I* know. That was a caricature... it was almost as if he had taken every aspect of his persona people had issue with and exaggerated it. In 10 years of visiting Trinity church, in 10 years of seeing Rev. Wright at various local events, I've NEVER seen him conduct himself in such a manner.
I do believe this is a play within a play and an attempt to innoculate Obama for the general election. I honestly don't think Obama knew what Wright was planning and that this three-day media storm is of Wright's own making.
We'll see come November whether this strategy worked.

...and driving around with him stuck to the wheel.
The vast majority of talking heads are totally slashing Wright. It's like watching a live political vivisection.
Wright is damaged now. The media is totally piling on him and positioning him as the bad guy.
Obama is being positioned as the victim of Wright---and Obama is now the "anti-Wright" go-to guy.
Hillary, McCain---no longer have to denounce Wright, because Obama is doing it now. Therefore the crisis is neutralized.
The media is also flowing over about Obama being distraught, upset and hurt by this.
You'll always have your Pat Buchanan's, and other hard-right wackos who won't side with Obama, but the vast majority of talking heads are completely lambasting Wright and siding with Obama on this.

43. I think the clue is here - from Wright himself, on Moyers. |
|
"He's a politician, I'm a pastor. We speak to two different audiences. And he says what he has to say as a politician. I say what I have to say as a pastor. Those are two different worlds. I do what I do. He does what politicians do."
Some people read this as a dis. I read it as a telegraphed punch.
I said late last week that O and Wright were working the media here. It might not be 'new politics,' but it is a truly brilliant way of using the 'old politics' against itself.

Your thinking that this is not possible is the kind of thinking that will lose Hillary the nomination. Underestimating your opponent is the worst thing you could do.

media coverage. She's peaked sweetheart. And do you want to know why?
The Clinton campaign is inept compared to the level that Obama is working on.

This one is a tough call for me. Fuck, to be a fly on the wall at Obama HQ.

Crazy like a fox. Obama and Wright played this so well that Hillary supporters are in full spin mode. Hillary supporters kept saying the GOP would slaughter Obama over Wright, so Obama and Wright did something about it. Grand Admiral Thrawn couldn't have played this better.

I dunno if this was strategeryizing or not. Either way I hope it plays well. If Hagee gets a free pass I will block every single Nooz channel on my satellite until the day I die.

74. If this was planned it wasn't planned very well, why did he say he couldn't disown previously if |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 06:45 PM by frickaline
the plan was to disown all along? That part doesn't fly for me.
"I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother" after the first offense and then after the next round he completely disowns Rev Wright.
How does this part fit into your plan? It seems to me that the RW is going to use this to attack Obama's credibility going forward, unfortunately, along with claims that he's disingenuous about the whole thing and secretly still praying with Wright.
I'll take Obama's word first and set conspiracy theories aside, tyvm.

Did that shut anyone...anyone up? Everyday there have been negative posts by some people about Reverend Wright, and every day the media states Reverend Wright as an 'issue'.

76. don't think so. If it weren't Wright, it would be something else. This is |

getting 24 hour coverage because msm bosses want diminishment of public discourse and smearing of the most dangerous dem candidate.

as you said, if it weren't this it would be something else. Let them play. And each time they go down the road of irrelevance they make themselves more irrelevant.

your inability to realize that you've been hoodwinked. You took the bait and Obama is a stronger GE candidate because of it.
