Bush would never chose a woman or minority for VP...
because his conservative Christian base would crucify him.

1. I think it's highly unlikely that the GOP
will ever nominate a woman or minority period.
It just goes against some pretty deeply held conservative beliefs.
Women and minorities have their place, just not in leadership positions.

They are sad little people those conservatives.

7. If Bush would dump Dick "Dick" Cheney and instead take...
...Powell as his VP he would increase his chances of winning (legally) by a considerable amount, even here in the (supposedly) racist South.

2. Apparently
neither will our Democrats. Alas, I'm a minority, so I get to pick from two rich white guys, or two other rich white guys.

What's the excuse there?

Four rich white guys!

4. A substantial proportion of voters in this country
see candidates who are female or minority as less qualified, radical, etc. Many of them are not wingnuts but have subtle biases they won't admit. The sexism, racism, etc. of these voters makes it risky to nominate anyone other than white males.

6. Edwards is a black woman???
Kerry wasn't exactly bold in his choice of a nice, safe, pro-war, white guy.

8. I disagree
I think the GOP will be the first to nominate a minority, and I'm rather surprised they haven't had a woman to follow up on Ferraro. "Only Nixon could go to China".

Would Colin Powell even count anymore?

10. Never underestimate the GOP's capacity for exploitation...
Republicans have gotten very savvy about putting up fronts, showing "faces," and often paying lip-service to diversity, etc.

It's all veneer, of course.

13. I don't like Bush and many Republicans....
...but insinuating that they are racists is somewhat unfair.

Look at Colin Powell, he's the Secretary of State. Condoleeza Rice is the National Security Advisor and many Freeper-types want her to run for President in 2008. Alan Keyes is one of the darlings of the far right fringe crowd, despite the fact that he's a black man.

Republicans are dopey and have many policies that are bad for minorities, but I don't think they're racists.

14. Now, that I will disagree with
My assertion that they would nominate a minority for VP is based directly on the premise that they ARE racists.

Powell and Rice are a smokescreen.

and the GOP is definitely racist in their attitudes and their policies.

18. Nooo, that wasn't your point
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 12:55 PM by ProfessorPlum
Your point was that calling Bush and the GOP racist was unfair.

And Byrd has apologized for the mistakes he made in the past.

And - of course we have racists in our own party. There are racists in large numbers in this country. But the racism endemic in the GOP is right out in the open, part of their platform, and they are not ashamed of it, nor do they see anything wrong with it. The GOP has a big problem with race relationships. The Dems have made some progress on that front (though not, as you must have wanted to point out, enough).

19. My bad, got you mixed up with the wrong poster
but my response holds. Saying that their are racists in the Democratic party (undoubtedly true) does not diminish the institutional racism which is part of the GOP's very reason-to-be.

15. As a woman
I would rather have 2 rich white guys who had my best interests at heart and would work for the rights of everyone than a woman like Condi who stands opposite of me on just about everything.

21. It would be terrific
to have a woman or minority on the Dem ticket. I think there will be women and minorities in Kerry's cabinet.

But, yes, ideology is more important than race or gender to me. I want someone who supports issues and causes that are important to me. If it happens to be a white guy, fine.

23. I think he would. The woman/minority would be in a secondary place,
subordinate to him. That's fine w/the religious right.

What matters to Georgie, besides keeping his base, is votes, though. I don't know of any woman besides Hillary Clinton who would be helpful to a ticket right now. There are several minorities I can think of who would (male, of course).

24. Two words: Condoleeza Rice, PhD
Bush has been quite effective at placing token women and anti-affirmative action minorities in prominent positions in his cabinet and administration. (His daddy did it with Clarence Thomas.) It's amazing -- I don't know what rocks he finds them under, but there they are, and evidently quite loyal.
