Was Rev Wright's performance yesterday a set-up to give Obama a
way to denounce him without offending his core African American base?

Just wondering because Obama should have done this a long time ago but for the political consequences of it.

1. It's very possible. It certainly played out that way
Not sure if it was by design or accident though.

5. In a word--yep.
I think they cooked it up because I think Wright's mini media blitz is too much of a coincidence. Now if the Repubs want to bring it up, he can say, "I denounced his statements TWICE--what more do you want?"

7. All that will do is split the "core AA base." People who thought Wright was all that aren't going
to deny him.

Why go through that, to split that "core AA base" AND push away white voters from all socio-economic groups?

It's senseless.

I think Wright sees the spotlight pointed at him, he knows the light is warm, bright and brief, and he's going to lap it up while he can.

13. I'm thinking yeah.
It killed so many birds with one stone.

1. It seperates Obama from the Angry Black dude.
2. It leaves Wright free to say anything he wants without his being tied to O.
3. It completely wrecks the GOP's plan to run that Wright ad day in and day out until November.
4. It takes the issue away from the Rightard Media - Hannity may as well go on vacation for a while.
5. It takes away a major Clinton pitch point to the superdelegates.

In basketball, they call this an 'ankle-breaker.' you get your defender leaning too far one way, then you cut the other way and leave him looking helpless and stupid - and lucky if he still has both shoes on his feet.

We might have seen the political play of the year today.

And yeah. I'm thinking it was a setup from the go.

20. I made a post
with that suspicion yesterday during the press conference, because on a couple of occasions, he seemed to be giving Obama an "out" by confirming Obama had never heard his sermon, so he has no business commenting on it. There seemed to me a theme of intentionally jabbing at Obama so Obama could be "angry" and separate himself. It doesn't matter to me either way, because I agree with much of what Wright said, and I understand that Obama can't because so many people in the country can't stomach the truth about their government. Or maybe Wright was being a jerk and trying to damage Obama, but he didn't seem to have the same demeanor on Bill Moyers than he did at the Press Club. So I would like to believe he was trying to help him. Then again, maybe Obama was really angered and hurt, and Rev. Wright will make another statement keeping it in the news. We'll see over the next few days I guess.

Either way, I think this will eventually put most of it to rest, except for the people who say "20 years too late!!" the same ones who were saying "why doesn't he denounce him!" when it all came out. Those people can't be pleased no matter what he does, because they don't want to be. The same ones who don't seem to care about the issues that actually have an affect on their lives.

Get it straight.

I don't accuse all clinton supporters of thinking monolithically, and I expect the same in return.

Thanks in advance.

Make ads saying that Obama used to be associated with an Angry Black Dude?

Let them try it. Obama would eat their breakfast and lunch and make them the butt of the biggest political joke ever.

19. Of course not
Because there's no way to tell how this would play out. As much power as you claim Obama supporters give him he can't predict how this would have been received. He also can't predict how his press conference will be received. Add to that he has no way to pedict how people will react.

This is actually a pretty stupid theory.

21. Rather than a set-up, it could be that Obama once again just smartly played the cards he was dealt.
No one has made more lemonade from the lemons in this campaign than Sen. Obama. I see no reason to think he didn't just assess the situation as it presented itself and deal with it.

22. Nope. Black pastors don't operate that way. Many of them are quite vain.......
and Knowing my own pastor very well, they have a tendency to say exactly what is on their minds; especially those from the old school.

article that conservative CNN pundit Amy Holmes wrote in March about this very strategy:

28. Either way, it seems to be a net positive for Obama. I honestly, I think Wright is smarter than that
...than to garner the flies of the media by sticking the honey of a prideful person out there for all to see.

Wouldn't be shocked honestly
