Hillary: "If you'd had my life, you'd be tough too." -- Wha?
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 03:14 PM by Khaotic
Presenting "It's A Hard-Knock Life" (feat. Hillary Clinton and Dr. Evil)

On Monday, America's favorite working-class hero told a North Carolina audience: "If you'd had my life, you'd be tough too." It must have been hard, all those years in the Governor's mansion and the White House, followed by a $109 million windfall.

Wit out kickin' out da violin, this video was made instead:

1. Wasn't her upbringing very affluent?
And she's lived in mansions most of her adult life.

34. actually upper middle & she attended Wellesley - hardly the slums
She's from Park Ridge, an affluent suburb west of Chicago. She attended Wellesley and Yale Law - hardly state schools. I'm guessing her dad didn't work in a steel mill like mine did.

As far as emotionally tough, if she were strong she would've dumped the jerk when he cheated on her.

45. If she were strong
she would have admitted to herself that she couldn't win after PA and would have dropped out instead of continuing on, hurting the party's chances for November. Democrats would do well not to confuse "selfishness" and "vanity" with "strong" and "tough".

I thought she grew up in a relatively happy family. I never heard anything negative about her family until her brothers raked in money for the pardons they pitched to Bill.

57. According to Bernstein's biography,
her father was sort of a jerk. Not that it was abusive home or anything, but it's not the Donna Reed Show, either.

"Hillary Rodham’s childhood was not the suburban idyll suggested by the shaded front porch and gently sloping lawn of what was once the family home at 235 Wisner Street in Park Ridge, Illinois. In this leafy environment of postwar promise and prosperity, the Rodhams were distinctly a family of odd ducks, isolated from their neighbors by the difficult character of her father, Hugh Rodham, a sour, unfulfilled man whose children suffered his relentless, demeaning sarcasm and misanthropic inclination, endured his embarrassing parsimony, and silently accepted his humiliation and verbal abuse of their mother."

Obama had a full scholarship to Punahao, which he never attended as a boarder. And guess what, genius? People from economically deprived backgrounds attend every major prep school in the country. They go to Choate and Andover, Deerfield, Pomfret etc, etc. And wow! Not everyone in Hawaii is rich. There are poor people and middle class people there too! Obama did not grow up in a family as well off as hillypoo's, old lady.

53. Here are some facts about "Baby Bam"
<<snip>>
http://www.barackobama.com/about/

Barack's mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in small-town Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor, where he marched across Europe in Patton's army. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line, and after the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved west to Hawaii.

It was there, at the University of Hawaii, where Barack's parents met. His mother was a student there, and his father had won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams in America.

Barack's father eventually returned to Kenya, and Barack grew up with his mother in Hawaii, and for a few years in Indonesia. Later, he moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.

Remembering the values of empathy and service that his mother taught him, Barack put law school and corporate life on hold after college and moved to Chicago in 1985, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment.

The group had some success, but Barack had come to realize that in order to truly improve the lives of people in that community and other communities, it would take not just a change at the local level, but a change in our laws and in our politics.

He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard in 1991, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.

25. Makes sense to me
Money doesn't buy happiness. Once a person has money, they are freed from a lot of pressure - paying the electric bill and whatnot. But it's a strange thing - they are now able to worry about other things and happiness is not a "given". She's been harassed on every level - her professionalism, her investments, her "relationship" with vince foster, her husband has been accused of everything from murder to rape by the right wing, Rush Limbaugh called her 12-year-old daughter a "dog", she's been "accused" of being a lesbian by people who think that it's a terrible thing to be a lesbian. Now even the people in her own Party, many of them here on DU, disparage her as if she were Ann Coulter.

I think I can see her point. Sh's damn tough and I admire her perseverance.

Her toughness and resilience are part of what I admire about her.

And Barack earned 4.2 million last year, so I guess we can discount his entire past, too. Though as I have pointed out before, he has never attended one US public school in his life. I understand that's the norm in Hawaii, but he didn't go to a state university either (and there are plenty of good ones) - he headed off to Occidental, and then Columbia, which is one of the expensive private colleges in the US.

30. In all fairness to Hilary
regardless of the glam we associate with her life, she's had to go through a lot emotionally. It must be awful having people (like me, I admit) say vile things about you all the time. Being betrayed by your husband is scarring -- having it play out in the press is beyond imagining. Psychology 101, but I often wonder if that's how she's become so adept at doing some of the things that I believe she knows are wrong.

32. Wow, your right wing daddy never showed you (HRC) love and attention ... you've seemingly spent
your entire adult life proving to your daddy that you're *as tough* as your brother. Unfortunately, being a Goldwater Girl in your youth did not score you the daddy's attention - but "triangulating" to the right snagged you Richard Scaith, Uncle Karl and Rupert Murdoch. The sad REALISM is that if you DO win the Democratic Nomination, those right wing supporters would *gleefully* place the figurative political knife in your back. Do you HONESTLY think that Bill is staying on his "woman diet?" No, the right wing are "playing a role" for now ... they've always hated you and Bill ... the joy at your LONG AND HARD FALL will be the icing on the cake for your GOP rivals... have the smears on tape and at the ready ... but presently they're sitting on it - NOT - because they now like you, but because they wish to politically annihilate you. :wow:

Reminds me of that scene in the movie Operation Petticoat when Tony Curtis is talking about all the people who say that money isn't everything. Then he points out that most of the people saying that are the people with all the money.

She voted for the bankruptcy reform bill and was glad when it didn't pass. The bill was opposed by every major consumer group in the country.

The blow job seeking husband does make life hard, ask Hillary. Of course when the blow job seeking husband lies under oath it does complicate things just a little bit. Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 03:16 PM by JasonHill
it fascinates me how some here are so beholden to this person while at the same time claiming she represents liberal values. Promoting Rational community behavior is a liberal value. If you do not believe in behaving as rational as possible, including have the character to try to diminish spinning, deception, etc. as much as possible, yo are not representing liberalism, despite whatever you do in claiming to back some of the values associated with the movement. All that gets you when the hit hits the shan is voting for giving Bush political cover to invade and occupy Iraq.

edit: clarified

something to prove to her affluent Republican family who basically ostracized her after she went liberal in college.

60. Tough people don't make up war stories
That's something you do puff yourself up and make yourself look bigger than you are - because you're afraid or because you feel inadequate. I've done it - back when I was 18 and still very unsure of my place in the world. And if I told you my whole backstory, you'd know why I felt weak and needed to compensate. I've had many toughening experiences both before and after that, and one thing I learned is that scars look impressive after they've healed, but healing takes time and doesn't alter the fact that it hurt like hell when you first got wounded.

Hillary Clinton has been through some tough times. She's had lofty goals, and the self-confidence and drive to pursue them. That takes lots of guts and I respect that. And she's taken a lot of hits along the way and I respect that too. But it hasn't been all thorns and no roses, any more than her life has been a bouquet of flowers. A vacation home with no heating or shower sure beats no vacation home at all, or no vacation at all.

I could tell all sorts of hair-raising stories, from my own life or from the lives of people I know. So can many others, I'm sure - few people develop strong political convictions because they've enjoyed a life of ease and privilege, after all. It's often interesting and valuable to look back over hard times and examine how we got through them, and learn from each other. Hillary Clinton has some great true stories to tell that we can all learn from.

But embellishment doesn't teach anything. And assuming that your listeners have had it easy compared to you just means you're still in love with your own pain.
