NC Elections board seeking source of robocalls giving false info (to African-Americans)
Huffington Post:

APRIL 29: State election officials are looking for the source of robocalls targeting African-American household with false voter information:

Bob Hall, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, said in a news release that the calls were being made to African American households. The good government watchdog posted audio of the call.

-snip-

"This is another in a long line of deceptive practices used in North Carolina and elsewhere that particularly target African-American voters," Hall said. "In our view, this phone message plainly violates North Carolina law. We ask the Attorney General, State Bureau of Investigation, and the State Board of Elections to investigate, expose, and prosecute the sponsors of these calls."

Hall said that in North Carolina, it is a Class I felony for any person "to misrepresent the law to the public through mass mailing or any other means of communication where the intent and the effect is to intimidate or discourage potential voters from exercising their lawful right to vote."

5. This is an old familiar voter intimidation practice in North Carolina...
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 04:19 PM by marions ghost
Jesse Helms Co did it but was never prosecuted. Helms supporters' messages used to tell African American voters they could be arrested if they tried to vote.

Nothing new. I'm sure the local Rethuglicans are behind it and just warming up....(we all know who their pick is for the Dem candidate)

10. Something similar happened in Minneapolis in 2004

Certain neighborhoods were targeted by robocalls giving out false
info. on voting locations. I'm sure this happened elsewhere as well.

I know it happens elsewhere. But it's never prosecuted. Sounds like the NC election officials are trying to get info on the perps, but their track record is not good. Usually they make a show of concern, but that's it.

THIS is why we need standardized simplified voting that operates the same way everywhere. So people can't be so easily confused and intimidated.
