FORT LAUDERDALE - John Kerry's secret weapon to capture Southern votes might be not John Edwards but Edwards' wife.
Although the up-by-his-bootstraps North Carolina senator is expected to appeal to rural voters in states that are all but locked up for President Bush, Elizabeth Edwards might tip the scales in Florida, the most closely contested Southern state.

"I'm a native Floridian," she announced at a late-night rally in St. Petersburg, to the surprise and delight of thousands of raucous supporters.

"I was born in Jacksonville."

The Navy brat told the crowd that her parents married in Pensacola and live in Sarasota. Her sister lives in Bradenton.

"And I have aunts and uncles all over the state," she said. "Don't you embarrass me in front of my family! We've got to win Florida!"

The crowd ate it up.
