Area residents interviewed at random said this week they like the choice of N.C. Sen. John Edwards to be presumptive presidential nominee John Kerry's running mate on the Democratic ticket.
"He is the American dream, a self-made man and quite a contrast to the existing vice president," said Sylvia Ray, 66, a retired newspaper editor from Newton. "He has only five years in the Senate, but he is studious and well-prepared. With his legal training and background, he could step into the presidency if needed and do the job."
Ray said she met Edwards during his U.S. Senate campaign. Her impression: He is from the same mold as President Ronald Reagan. "He has a positive, optimistic view of our country," she said.
A registered Democrat, Ray voted for Gore in 2000.
Edwards "is a good man," said Nelson Jenkins, 29, of Hickory. "He talks about the right things: the economy, jobs and keeping jobs here." Jenkins said he's not registered to vote, but plans to do so before the November election and vote for Kerry.
