And I don't mean that in the sense of "only white people can be racist," because to me that's simply a matter of semantics - anyone can be prejudiced, it just takes a certain amount of power and influence to make that prejudice harmful on a large scale. I mean in the sense of, what has he ever said that was blanketly hateful toward white people? I see him, rather, as railing against the powers-that-be, which simply happen to be mostly white men.

And if you honestly think that not being proud of America, especially when you and your ancestors have been fucked over but good, is evidence of racism, then I don't even know what to say to you. This is exactly the kind of knee-jerk patriotism that "God damn America" was a reaction against.

One definition of nationalism is the pressure to be insanely proud of your country simply for existing. "Aren't you proud to be an American?" / "I dunno, I didn't have much to do with it, my parents fucked here" (the late great Bill Hicks). The USA exists, big freakin' whoop. None of the people alive today fought the War of Independence or framed the Bill of Rights or fought in the Civil War. Those were reasons to be proud of your country, being proud of it just because it happened to host your birth isn't.

Here (England), what Wright said or what Michelle Obama said (when she said she'd never really been proud of the country before) wouldn't have raised a damn eyebrow. You ever want to know why the rest of the world gets so irritated with Americans, shit like this is a big part of the reason. "You MUST be incredibly proud of America" / "Why?" / "Because it exists!".

I was listening to a right wing Bay Area talk show host tonight. He was upset because a caller stated that the U.S. had killed 1,000,000 people in Iraq and we needed to leave. He started yelling at the caller and basically said that since Saddam had usee,hemical weapons (which we gave him) we had to go over there and take him out. The only problem is we killed people, many innocent people. Are they a different kind of dead because America killed them. I guess it hurts less when your babies have their arms or legs blown off if the bombs come from the good old red, white and blue. I don't believe it is patriotic to stand by your Government when it is wrong and I pray that God does not damn America, but he just might.
