Your thesis is the opposite of highly likely. He knew Wright was a problem before he announced his candidacy. That's why he "disinvited" Wright to the ceremony. That's why Wright gave an interview to the NYT that everyone glossed over. That's why Wright's resentment has been building.
"Not knowing" is not an excuse--it's a problem for him. He can't credibly claim it.
