At the end of the press conference this was the exchange:

MODERATOR (reading question): Do you think it is God's will that Senator Obama be president?

AUDIENCE MEMBER: No! Come on!

REV. WRIGHT: I said I would offer myself for candidacy for vice president. I have not offered myself for candidacy of God; I can't presume to know what God would want.

In my tradition, however, what everybody has been saying to me as it pertains to the candidacy is, what God has for you is for you. If God intends for Mr. Obama to be the president, then no white racist, no political pundit, no speech, nothing can get in the way, for God will do what God wants to do.



I read that as 'I am going to say what I will say and if it's meant to be, it's meant to be'. He is/was looking for a way to skirt the blame by saying, well if he doesn't win it's not because I came out here and made an ass of myself and tried to make Obama look foolish, it's because God wants it that way.

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but that phrase to me made it look like he knew exactly what he was doing and was looking for an out as well as an opportunity to rub it in Obamas face.

Everything I have read about wright in the chicago newspapers suggests he is a politically savvy man...he had to know the impact of the Rev Wright show...now if it were only like the gong show, we could have gonged him then given him the hook...where's Chuck Barris when you need him?

For Wright to mock John F. Kennedy, the dead brother of one of Barack Obama's most important endorsers, can only be intepreted as a stab in the back. And yet, people here still defend Reverend Wright.

When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

This call for a worldwide fellowship that lifts neighborly concern beyond one's tribe, race, class, and nation is in reality a call for an all-embracing and unconditional love for all mankind. This oft misunderstood, this oft misinterpreted concept, so readily dismissed by the Nietzsches of the world as a weak and cowardly force, has now become an absolute necessity for the survival of man. We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate. And history is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate. As Arnold Toynbee says: "Love is the ultimate force that makes for the saving choice of life and good against the damning choice of death and evil. Therefore the first hope in our inventory must be the hope that love is going to have the last word" (unquote).
