AP: Florida Scraps Flawed Felon List
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40863-2004Jul10.html

The Associated Press
Saturday, July 10, 2004; 1:30 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida elections officials said Saturday they would not use a list of people believed to be convicted felons to purge voter rolls, acknowledging a flaw that left off some Hispanics.

The problem in compiling the list was unintentional, said Nicole de Lara, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Glenda Hood.

"Nevertheless, Supervisors of Elections are required to uphold their constitutional obligation" and will find other ways to ensure felons are removed from the rolls, Hood said in a statement.

The decision was made after it was reported that the list contained few people identified as Hispanic; of the nearly 48,000 people on the list created by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, only 61 were classified as Hispanics. That was because when voters register in Florida, they can identify themselves as Hispanic. But the potential felons database has no Hispanic category, which excludes many people from the list if they put that as their race.

1. Bullshit. If you have a list that doesn't contain Hispanic surnames...
it should kind of jump out at you. :puke:

2. Exactly. Am wondering how much FL taxpayers paid for this flawed list!

6. Hahhaha!
Now I imagine these lists had to be of names right? Of course! So tell me....if you saw surnames like: Gonzalez, Martinez, Lopez, Rivera, what would you think they are? Irish? Of course you could marry into a Hispanic name but then all these felons would have had to be women.

3. I'm sure they have a Plan B that's equally as corrupt
They'll exclude black voters, one way or another. I wonder if this list was a red herring to distract us from their real plans, since it was so close to what they got caught doing four years ago.

5. This makes me wonder -
Is there any kind of concerted effort being organized to have well-trained, well-informed observers at the polls in Florida to make sure voters are not disenfranchized on election day?

7. But let's not drop this.
They took the list off of the table. Great. Now we need to rub their noses in it for all to see.

Their 2004 list was so flawed they had to withdraw it. Imagine if that had happened in the 2000 election. Bush would not be in office right now.

Why was the list still so flawed four years after the Florida election debacle in 2000 anyway? It sort of reminds me of George W. Bush's administration still getting bad CIA information over a year after 9/11. Don't these Bush's ever learn?

8. It's just going to add names
From what I get from this, it will be worse because instead of scrapping the entire list I get the feeling that they are just going to add on more names to it... Possibly Democratic Hispanics from the Miami-Dade County area? I don't think this bodes well for fixing the issue correctly...
