Barack Obama Rally. Bloomington, IN 4-30-08 (pix heavy- dial-up warning)
Edited on Thu May-01-08 12:08 AM by RainDog
I just returned from a day of volunteering for the Obama campaign. He held a rally at Assembly Hall, the basketball arena on Indiana University's campus. We had to show up four hours before the rally began...then the rally started late. When I arrived at the venue, people were already standing in line to get in.

The national campaign first met up with volunteers. They were both professional and yet strangely devoid of republi-helmet hair. The Obama Indiana Campaign (insert the correct official title here) below.

The campaign said an important thing to us volunteers. Because we chose to come out to help this candidate, our behavior mattered. We effectively joined the campaign and if we acted like jerks, we reflected badly on the candidate. No confrontations with disruptors. No insults if someone starts insulting you... for some reason my mind drifted to DU...

Local organizers divided volunteers among about 10 team captains. We had more than 160 volunteers of all ages and I think it was four "ethnicities." I immediately saw a work friend I like very much. He and I always share musical finds. After we got set up, we had a long wait. Oh captain, my captain on the left.

The security included about four different groups. A policewoman was at the area where I was assigned to work. She regularly works the arena. She told me the venue seats 17,000 people (when set up as for a basketball game.) The doors to the venue opened at around 6 and people who had waited at least a couple of hours came flying up the ramp of the bldg to the upper level.

All ages, races, tastes... it was a blast to see all the different people. I took some pictures as ppl showed up, and at the time the rally began. While we were waiting, someone got a couple of giant beach balls going around the arena and a wave made a few rounds.

Baron Hill is the representative for this area. He supports Obama.

The rally was scheduled to start at 8pm. Some people had stood in line since 4. But people kept coming once the doors opened at 6. And coming. I went out to the policewoman and asked her how many people she thought were there. 12,000, she said immediately. I was surprised at that number. But people were on the floor of the court, and I couldn't see all the seats filling up sometimes because I was volunteering at a door.

Barack took the stage after Hill's introduction.

There were people on the floor behind the podium and as audience. they took up about half the court. Then the media set ups took up the other half. After he started speaking, people were still coming to the event.

The arena opened the balcony, though they had hoped to be able to keep it closed. Obama filled that hall and the mood was positive, joyful, sometimes, because here was future. -- The way beyond this horrific Bush kleptocracy incompetency.

Obama discussed his candidacy platform. Out of Iraq by '09 - with wisdom. Affordable college programs (no doubt a crowd pleaser.) He talked about personal responsibility, as a citizen of this country, to be a part of the process that makes progress beyond these last years.

After the rally I walked around a bit and came upon a poor man who had been so overwhelmed by this moment of Obamamania. He looked strangely familiar. hmmmm.

He had on a sparkly blue cape which he took off and glibly threw onto a "real" reporter's head.

6. Thank you for your opinion. We disagree on this issue.
Rallies are a staple of American politics. There was a rally for Hillary, in fact, a few days before. She didn't draw even half the crowd, so the policewoman said.

whatever the case, this thread is to celebrate a wonderful moment for a lot of people. If you want to fight about Hillary, I'd appreciate it if you'd take it somewhere else.

thanks!

21. I can only talk about my burg
I'm not an official part of anything, so I'm not aware of state-wide issues. I'm just focusing on gotv where I am. This is a liberal town. We've had female and hispanic mayors. It's a dem stronghold, tho the state has not been.

The attitude here is excitement. People are excited about the prospect of an Obama presidency because they believe the moderate-progressive message he is sending. Again, since I'm not a pol-affiliated person, I cannot tell you stats about Hillary here, tho I read on another thread she leads in agricultural areas and Obama leads in cities.

There was simply a joy there. A joy that an African-American man is running for president and whites are as enthusiastic as blacks. One (af-am) woman who came in late looked around and said "I can't believe it." Anti-Bush sentiment has been extremely strong here and Obama is like a spring breeze in comparison to the storm clouds of Bush/Chenyism.

so... enthusiasm for Obama is high. His local hdqtrs had to move to a larger building b/c of the outpouring of support and offers to volunteer. This area is apparently at the top of cities with a strong volunteer campaign support group.

34. 2000 was my "political awakening"
The whole political impeachment for election purposes disgusted me, but when the Supreme Court made a one time decision to stop a voter recount and install an obviously incompetent oil co lap dog... and all the horrors that have followed... I wouldn't be politically active for a candidate at this time, even so, if that candidate were not Obama.

I know Clinton has many positive qualities. However, she simply cannot inspire a belief that she is anything other than politics as usual. Her campaign has reinforced this idea.

We're facing a lot of tough decisions ahead. I trust Obama to make decisions based upon what is best for this nation, not what is best for his political life. He is reaching out to voters who have felt entirely left out of the process to say that we the people, as a force for a positive future, can work to deal with problems that Republicans have tried to pretend do not exist. Even some republicans seem to see that we're all going to have to work together to meet both domestic and international challenges. This is what is inspiring about him. He is asking for participation, not simply votes.

I was mildly interested before, I voted, but, other than that I just went with the flow. Then came the political lynchiing of Bill Clinton-- Then came GW. I figured if I didn't get involved, how could I expect anyone else to get involved, and fix this mess!

I always say that the difference between Clinton and Obama is that Clinton says what she would do, Obama says what WE would do.

60. I've always voted for "the lesser of two evils"
not saying any democrat is evil - for the literalists - tho none of them, other than Al Gore were my first choice. (but then.. Lieberman. ugh) Anyway, this time I'm voting for someone I really want to win. It's a positive vote rather than a cancel vote.

After 9-11 I was slack-jawed that Bush's advice to Americans was to "go shopping." Yeah, great advice, really captured that "everything's different now" spin. :argh: Bush is so rotten to the core he couldn't get beyond his oil buddies' profits to use that momentum to get going on alternative energy programs... a public service program for that issue is needed, imo, as an issue of infrastructure. He couldn't ask people to use mass trans instead of drive... Detroit is a symbol for that sort of Bush think, with the auto companies' failure to look forward to hybrids instead of appealing to the big truck, little... uh.. smuck mentality.

Yeah, he's funny, and not always in the way that puts him in one camp v other on lots of things. But you can hear the crowd at the end of that clip. It was as loud as any basketball game I'd been to there.

The policewoman at the rally told me the 12k figure BEFORE they opened the balcony. I'm looking forward to comparing her numbers to the ones in the newspaper. but newspapers ask ppl like her anyway, to get this info.

35. cross post/link to another thread about the Bloomington rally
first- here's a link to the Hillary rally earlier -

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/25/164357/960/898/503528

The policewoman I had talked to said there were about 3000 people at the Hillary Rally. This same person said 12000 at the Obama rally. The local paper put the total at 13000. As noted above, the policewoman gave her figure before the arena opened the balcony.

here's a link to the Obama rally thread by Hope and Change -

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5765198

This page from the local newspaper has a slide show of the rally. I can't link to it directly, but the slide show is on the right side of the page, under 05/01/08 -then- Photos: Rally Photos. Very good, professional quality pictures, unlike my digital easybake oven camera.

As far as helmet hair - I used to laugh when republican women would parade around with their helmet hair. I imagine them wrapping their heads in toilet paper to keep their 'do. LOL. You'll have to post a picture in the lounge after you get your new 'do.

46. from a nearby small town coverage
Omg. I just found this quote from a little town paper nearby. The town where this newspaper is located is where tons of limestone is quarried. When I've driven down the highway on my way to a park a little south of this town, I've seen those plywood signs with stencil-style painting that said "U.S. Out of U.N." In other words, it's sort of a different universe.

however, this local politician's remark sums up, to me, the... obliviousness of certain party insiders.

Dan Combs, a long-time Democratic leader in Bloomington and a Clinton supporter, said older voters feel the 60-year-old New York senator is “more mature and seasoned ... And I hate to sound jaded and cynical, but a lot of us older Democrats have been down the visionary path before with Robert Kennedy, Gary Hart, even Bill Clinton,” he said. “I don’t think things are bad enough that we need a visionary.”

http://www.tmnews.com/stories/2008/04/30/news.nw-569457.tms

LOL. Even Hillary runs on Bill's record in office! And... what was the problem with Robert Kennedy as a visionary again? Sorry, I guess I missed that moment. Yeah, that LBJ is a great example of a political triangulator. LBJ supported civil rights but wouldn't vote for it until his entire political career had imploded. Yeah, that's an example of what I want in a leader.

imo, those "older democrats" who have been "down the visionary path" who now sound "jaded and cynical" should face a fact: You no longer represent the future of this nation. If you don't want to go forward, at least get out of the way of those who do.

A post from another political figure:

“Polls show people under age 30 tend to be more accepting of racial and religious differences and homosexuality,” she said. “Part of that may be because more of them have parents from different racial groups than previous generations.”

and, psssst. I have a clue to share with pols. Many, many parents of those children (I'm one of them) who are not mixed-race raised their children to see Martin Luther King as a hero. To see racism, homophobia and religious intolerance for the problems they are. Things HAVE BEEN BAD ENOUGH that we need a change of course and we will have to make that happen. Obama gives people hope that this change is possible because we have a leader who shares the same values.
