Mason/Dixon Poll: Presidential Race Considered Dead Heat In N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Results are in from the first statewide poll since North Carolina's John Edwards joined John Kerry in the race for the White House. From the numbers, the news is mixed. Right now, the WRAL/Mason-Dixon poll shows George Bush and John Kerry in a statistical dead heat in North Carolina. Just three points separate them, though the gap was closer three months ago. The undecided vote could make all the difference.

sigh

I would enjoy a good GOP poster just for the fun of answering fact and logic questions - but it seems that those that do post go into rant mode like D guy very quickly!

Keep up the good work; I'm hoping I'll be knowledgeable enough some day to do the same.

Hooray for the good guys!

I haven't seen others on here who say they hate the USA. On the contrary, I believe we want to make this country better. What are you doing to make it better?

B-b-but I thought he was fourteen points BEHIND in the poll that's been shouted from the rooftops?
Anyone who panicked over that one needs to relax. Although I don't believe we have anything other than a slim chance to take the state, there's no way Edwards does anything other than help the ticket in North Carolina.

10. Best Part of Story
"He won North Carolina by 13 percentage points in 2000. If North Carolina is that close, say three, four, five percentage points, that's an 8 percent gain by the Democrats. If that's replicated across the country, then Kerry wins and Kerry wins pretty well," he said."

And allow me to add a personal message to d guy "Shut the Cheney up"!

20. If that sort of gap-closure holds up
in NC, VA, and TN, then we are doing very well indeed. Good news, although I expect we'll fall back a bit after the GOP Hate Machine really gets rolling.

21. I still believe
we'll end up doing best in Virginia, mainly because a 1/3 of the state is in NVA and it includes alot of rank and file federal workers who are ticked off at how the Fed governtment has been run.

29. Not really.
NoVa is expen$ive -- I just moved out of Centreville, where I could not afford a townhouse, and bought in Maryland, where I could afford a house with a great yard for kids, convenient to the commuter rail.

Rank and file govies live in Montgomery and Prince George county. NoVa is the home of people who are making a killing from Bush's kleptocracy.

And the rest of VA is military or guns/gays/god.

OTOH, you could say NC is exactly the same as VA, with RTP subbing for NoVa, and the NC numbers are saying "boo." I hope we are running close enough in September that Bush has to drop a wad of cash in both states.

23. didn't Rasmussen report that NC had tightened up?
The paragraph from linked article seems strange, because I don't recall that ANYONE reported NC to be "closer three months ago" than 3 points--I thought most polls showed Bush with a strong lead. Does anyone else recall ANY poll with Kerry tied with or ahead of Bush in NC?

In any case, "statistical dead heat" is very good news, even if this polls is a bit odd.

33. when Mason-dixon last polled NC in May
they had Bush with a 7 point lead. However, the did ask how people would vote if Edwards was added to the ticket it then shrank to a one point margin.

24. See this paragraph--Kerry needs to get to NC
"The WRAL/Mason-Dixon poll found Edwards is the second-most favored candidate just behind Bush. John Kerry is the least favorable. It also said that 64 percent of North Carolinian's approve of Kerry's decision in choosing Edwards as a running mate."

since he picked Edwards as vp. also kerry has not been running ads there so they have only seen the attacks from bush on kerry.but with kerry now buying ad time in the state they may change their views.

30. Wrong -- Kerry needs to stay the hell away from NC
Edwards is far more popular than Kerry in NC, so if the campaign sends anyone, it should be Edwards. Sending Kerry would only remind them of why they don't like him. Kerry sounds a lot better to these people when Edwards is talking about him.

27. I knew the Gallup Poll was bull
I live in this state and Chimpy is not that popular. They need to visit other parts of NC besides just Raleigh. Spend some serious time in Bowles hometown of Charlotte. I would really like to see Edwards spend about a ton of time in the Fort bragg area where the military base is talking about Iraq.

I just might pull my arm out of socket by patting myself on the back. I have been saying for months that we will be in play and it is because of the economy. NC is losing lots of jobs, not just textiles but white collar jobs in research, banking and IT. My wife's job is being shipped to India and many of her co-workers are going to vote Demo for the first time this fall.

31. 10% of African-Americans are undecided
if they break strongly for Kerry/Edwards (Kerry has 84% of AA vote compared to 6% for Bush) that could be enough to put Kerry over the top.

39. How many are still undecided after Bush dissed the NAACP? I know the
NAACP isn't popular with all African-Americans but I doubt that many are going to vote for someone who goes out of their way to be nasty toward them.

40. I would expect Kerry to win at least 85%
of the African-American vote here (I haven't found state breakdowns by race for the last election, but nationwide Clinton won 84% in 1996 and Gore won 90% in 2000, and I can't imagine Kerry could do any worse than that, given Edwards on the ticket and the way Bush has slighted the A-A community) ... the key is the size of the turnout ... there are around a million A-A's registered, about 90% of them as Democrats, so say a 60% A-A turnout as opposed to a 50% turnout adds about 70-80 thousand votes to Kerry, equivalent to about a 3 point bump statewide
