Draft Dean For VP Movement Backs Edwards as VP
From Michael Meurer, co-founder National Draft Dean for VP

We are dropping the floor fight in favor of a simple resolution of appreciation for Gov. Dean that will end as a show of support by Dean Democrats for the Kerry/Edwards ticket. Please accept my apologies for not e-mailing you sooner. Your help has been instrumental in all that we have accomplished over the past two months, and your feedback on our next moves is obviously welcomed.

Our e-mail is running about 65% to 70% in favor of closing ranks behind Kerry/Edwards. I also had a chance to talk with Gov. Dean briefly during his trip to Los Angeles last week, and he told me he does not want to see a floor fight. He was very, very appreciative of all that we have done, but he is going to campaign hard for Kerry/Edwards and wants all of us to do the same.

I talked to Tom McMahon at DFA the day of the Edwards announcement. I explained the idea for the tribute resolution and he loved it. I have a call in for Terry McAuliffe to discuss the idea, and I also have a contact at the DNC who works with McAuliffe who is helping us explore the best way to work with the DNC on such a tribute / expression of support.

We did a good job of keeping Gov. Dean's name in the news for six weeks, and we kept hard core Dean supporters engaged who might otherwise have defected to Nader. Now we need to unite behind the Kerry/Edwards ticket and keep a dialog going with the supporters who are still at risk of either sitting out this election or voting for Nader, which we estimate may be as high as 25% to 35% of the nearly 8,000 people who signed the petition

1. How disappointing....
...for the right wingers who wanted to make hay out of it.

3. good
it was a daffy idea in the first place. I'm glad Dean has more sense than some of his followers.

5. Followers? Please use the correct term which is *supporters*
;) Also, Dean's supporters are the ones who decided to opt out of a floor fight. I knew all along it was a political ploy to get some attention on Dean as a possible running mate and nothing more. Also, if Nadir is a spoiler again, we may wish he was THE running mate.

Though I think Edwards is doing a bang up job. :hi:

9. Perhaps, Dookus, but there was method to the madness:

are most likely the reason people like them did what they did?

12. umm...
no. You're saying they threatened a floor fight at the convention cuz of "people like me"? I'm flattered that you think I and my ilk have such power, but I'm not sure what you mean. What are "people like me"?

6. Good for Dr. Dean and his supporters
They're doing the right thing.

Dean has done so much to change the Democratic party for the better- that's a tribute to Dean that will hopefully last.

8. That sort of goes along with this post I made the other day.
This is the first time this type of group has been attempted. There are mistakes, disagreements, anger, frustration. It means experimenting, compromising. Remember Dean has even suggested to Nader to join forces. I like that Dean respects him, as I think Nader has contributed a lot to our society in the past.

This post is about the possibility of others joining as separate progressive groups, but with the goal of remaking the party from the ground up. That is the DFA goal after November....so that we are not as bound to corporations.

14. Cooler heads prevail
They should have a whole day at the convention to fete Howard Dean. Let those who love him cheer into the night, and let everyone else understand the diamond in the rough who came out of Vermont.

17. Dean is ahead of his time . . .
. . . and history will make a hero out of him. But don't worry; I have the feeling that he's not done yet. :-)
