Edwards Assails Bush on Iraq Failures, Quizzed on Milk, Beer Prices

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards assailed President Bush for lacking the courage of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who on Wednesday took full responsibility for the intelligence failures that led both nations into war in Iraq.

Embarking on his first solo campaign as John Kerry's running mate, Edwards kicked it off in Iowa, the state that salvaged his political aspirations with a strong second-place finish in the presidential caucuses seven months ago.

"I love Iowa. I'm so happy to be back here," Edwards told about a thousand cheering Kerry-Edwards supporters on the grounds of the state Capitol. "The time I spent in Iowa was so important to where I am today."

Domestic issues would seem a natural topic for a Democratic candidate campaigning in the heartland, but the campaign decided that Edwards would focus on national security and lead the Democratic voices comparing Bush to Blair.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic vice presidential contender John Edwards may not know how much milk costs in New Mexico, but he's got a handle on his local grocery prices.

Edwards has promoted himself as the down-to-earth candidate who can relate to the struggles of working families, while trying to portray Vice President Dick Cheney as out of touch.

Broadcaster Don Imus put those claims to the test Thursday, quizzing the North Carolina Democrat about the costs of a gallon of milk and six-pack of beer in Albuquerque, N.M.

"You were just in Albuquerque, do you know?" Imus asked.

1. The Quiz Is A Frightening Reminder Of How One Dumb Incident
Can sink a politician for life. Like Wolfowitz not knowing the number of dead soldiers - oh, wait, the media let that one go.

At least Edwards got the question right (or right enough). But who knows when some stupid question like this could blow the whole thing.

2. He was right though...
He said a half gallon is $2.30-2.40 and in Charlotte,NC it is $2.29 right now.. Here in Texas it was $2.19 this morning for me!! I cant understand how a half gallon in New Mexico could cost .69 cents more than Texas? Maybe a New Mexico resident could explain this price difference..

3. I thought Imus referred to a GALLON at $3 which would make it cheaper

in Albuquerque, which it well could be. Edwards gave the price for a HALF gallon and he's definitely in the range of what it is in the DC area, where, as the article points out, he does reside parttime as a Senator!

So his answer was perfect, despite the spin.

4. Unfair questions.
I do the shopping in my house, and I have no idea what a 1/2 gal. runs. Nor the price of beer. I never buy either.

But I do know the price of a gal. of milk. It's about $3. Anywhere from 2.70 - 3.30, really.

I know the price of the stuff I buy. Like the price of soy milk or the price of a double latte. :)

I also know the price of another four years of George Bush in the Whitehouse.

5. $2.49 - $2.55
Here in Oregon. I don't totally understand the differences in prices in milk either, other than some states regulate and some don't.

Edwards Shows Common Touch
Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) told NBC's Today this morning that he and his wife celebrate their anniversary each year at Wendy’s. According to Reuters, Elizabeth Edwards "said on their first anniversary they were moving house, looking 'grungy and awful' and so instead of going somewhere fancy they chose Wendy's."

Meanwhile, Edwards also proved his knowledge of grocery prices on Don Imus’ radio show this morning. Imus asked Edwards if he knew how much a half-gallon of milk and a six-pack of beer cost. Edwards replied, "I haven't bought a six-pack of beer in years, so I don't know." But on the subject of milk, Edwards said, "I know about what it costs. I think a half gallon of milk costs about $2.30, $2.40," he said. "Is that right?"

The AP confirms that a half gallon "of non-name brand whole milk sells for $2.29 at the Safeway grocery store in Edwards' upscale Georgetown neighborhood in Washington. It's $2.09 at Smith's Food & Drug Centers in Albuquerque."
