List of Electoral Votes by state 00 to 04 (population chgs)
http://www.fec.gov/pages/elecvote.htm

We all know that in '04 the electoral votes assigned have changed slightly due to the 2000 census.

An apparent net loss (PA, MI, WI, IL, NY) for the Blue states but opportunity for more EVs in FLA.

We are starting at a disadvantage...

1. A lot of those votes have moved to NC
And prolly less to FL as it's draw is retured people. Less impact as it's equalled by republicans also moving to FL. But it's the research triangle that's drawing young, intelligent progressives disproportionately. Zogby spoke of it a lot in a WP online chat - maybe someone can find the link ....

6. NC gained one electoral vote.
There was a spat between Utah and NC over who would get it, because the census methods were in doubt. Oh well, Kerry is more likely to carry NC than Utah!

The only blue state that has gained EV's is California, IIRC.

10. I'd say they're purplish.
We carried it in 96 and 2000 (depending on who you ask) but Bush pere carried it twice, I believe.

12. I think that shows a Democratic trend if you ask me.
It used to be a much more Republican state, but now it is tied in a close election.

9. Red states gainging blue votes is good for the blue team
Think about 2000: Gore won the popular vote. Had enough people who voted Gore voted in "red" instead of "blue" states, Gore would have also won the electoral vote.

4.  '00 map + kerry gains OH, WV, and FL
Kerry: 312
Bush: 226

Of OH (20 electoral votes), WV (5) and FL (27), I am the least confident about WV.

Of the '00 Gore states, I am worried most about WI (10 votes). Some say to watch NJ (15).

Of all the states, NC (15) is the most difficult to read.

Bush states to watch: LA (9), AR (6), and VA (13). Many others say to watch CO (9).

Just my opinion...

7. NJ isn't going to Bush
NJ is one of the most liberal states in the country. Their senators are Corzine and Lautenberg, and both are to the left of Kerry.

5. The census undercount of big city African-Americans contributed to the
loss of some of those seats.
