"With Friends Like These . . . " -- Welcome, Sandy Berger!
For failing to disclose to the Kerry campaign that he was under criminal investigation for misshandling classified national security documents, Sandy Berger has earned a coveted spot on my "With Friends Like These . . . " list.

Other members of this exclusive club include:

1. Mayor Menino -- for publicly trashing John Kerry and for displaying extreme incompetence in failing to resolve years old labor disputes in time for the convention.

2. The picketing police unions -- for bullying Kerry into skipping a meeting with the national conference of mayors, and then rewarding him by threatening to picket the Democratic National Convention.

3. New York fundraiser Judith Hope -- for launching a very public a and highly critical personal crusade to give Hillary Clinton a prominent speaking role at the convention, even though a few well placed phone calls would have done the trick.

4. Donna Brazille -- for never missing an opportunity to provide highly critical, on-the-record remarks about the Kerry campaign. Sorry Donna, you had your chance in 2000. It's time to let it go.

The one question I have is, do we know Berger didn't tell the Kerry campaign? The reason I ask is, even Bill Clinton has known for months. It's possible he told them, but gave them the impression the investigation was over because no one from the FBI has interviewed him or contacted his lawyer for months.

Hey, if nothing else, this is good practice for Kerry in dealing with sudden developments that aren't exactly welcome.

4. I agree
This one is on Kerry. If he didn't know he should have known. The campaign needs another shake-up. They're too LAX.

6. Excuse me, but exactly HOW should Kerry have known?
Especially if Berger and his lawyer weren't talking?

5. All the reports I've seen indicate that the Kerry campaign was in the dark
I suspect that had the Kerry campaign known, Berger would have been discreetly dropped as a campaign adviser months ago.

12. Said he didn't
I read that the lawyer said it wasn't supposed to be discussed. Even if Berger did tell the campaign, the campaign couldn't admit it because then Berger would have been talking about something he wasn't supposed to. Maybe that's why Berger isn't a paid consultant. And maybe that's why it was leaked now, to make it look like a leak ahead of the 9/11 commission so it will get buried between that and the convention.

...although Saint Ralph has gone so far over the deep end that it's hard to call him a "friend" anymore.

As an aside DTH, I've got a joint county convention coming who might be interested in your recent project on foriegn relations we touched on a few weeks ago. If you get me something I'll print some up to take.

16. Well, I never considered Zell to be a "friend"
But sure, it's hard to think of any other "Democrat" who is working as hard to defeat Kerry as Zell is.

17. You sure Berger didn't tell the Kerry campaign? But I agree with
your list. Even if Berger did tell the Kerry campaign, he's on the list for doing something so stupid in the first place (whether it was intentional or accidental).

If you can't tell the difference between Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman, then you obviously haven't been doing your homework.

He should not have kept the Kerry campaign in the dark as he (apparently) did.
