21. I think people always thought highly of him as a person, but thought he
just didn't perform well as a president. I'm not sure that that sentiment has changed so much. What's changed is that after he left the president he continued to be an even better man than before, when he clearly could have taken another route, and he is correctly getting the respect and admiration he deserves.

27. I disagree ...

He was an AWESOME president, his administration just didn't do a good job at selling what they had done.

I'll say it once again. Jimmy Carter DEFEATED gas lines. Jimmy Carter raised American prestige by making human rights an international policy priority.

Finally, I dare say those hostages WOULD HAVE been released had Reagan not negotiated his first arms for hostages deal before he was even elected.

4. A government as compassionate as it's people.
They knew the horrors of war....a clear sense of mission. A confidence in our leadership , not staring wars of choice.

Telling it like it is.

This is the first time I've seen him as an old man. What a blessing that he's reached this age with his mind and heart intact.

8. My letter from Jimmy Carter is one of my prized posessions...
Got it from him when I was seven years old and sent him a letter in crayon saying how much I admired him.

I still have the letter in the frame I put it in the day it came.

Yes, I know it was a form letter. I don't care. Jimmy was and still is the man.

18. I loved Clinton's speech, but I had the most respect for Carter's
True nobility, and careful but unmistakable anger at the foolishness that needlessly amplified the threats to our security, coupled with his characteristic faith in our ability to ultimately do what is right, both for ourselves and the world. Carter is a great man.

23. Link to transcript of President Jimmy Carter's speech
http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/dnc/nyc-carter-speech,0,3793374.story?coll=ny-homepage-big-pix

Excerpt, final four pragraphs:

You can't be a war president one day and claim to be a peace president the next, depending on the latest political polls. When our national security requires military action, John Kerry has already proven in Vietnam that he will not hesitate to act. And as a proven defender of our national security, John Kerry will strengthen the global alliance against terrorism while avoiding unnecessary wars.

Ultimately, the issue is whether America will provide global leadership that springs from the unity and integrity of the American people or whether extremist doctrines and the manipulation of truth will define America's role in the world.

At stake is nothing less than our nation's soul. In a few months, I will, God willing, enter my 81st year of my life, and in many ways the last few months have been some of the most disturbing of all. But I am not discouraged. I do not despair for our country. I believe tonight, as I always have, that the essential decency, compassion and common sense of the American people will prevail.

And so I say to you and to others around the world, whether they wish us well or ill: do not underestimate us Americans. We lack neither strength nor wisdom. There is a road that leads to a bright and hopeful future. What America needs is leadership. Our job, my fellow Americans, is to ensure that the leaders of this great country will be John Kerry and John Edwards. Thank you and God bless America!

26. I hate to use this term as I've been labeled with it ...

He was too much of a "fancy talker" to be really effective. Though, I think we still all love the man and he's absoluetly brilliant. At times, Carter sounded like he was at an international academic conference for international policy scholars.

I caught his speech today on C-Span, because I sadly missed it last night. I've found the media coverage of his speech to be really fair and positive, too.

Jimmy Carter has always been one of my personal heroes.
