Anyone else notice how Carter never actually mentioned Bush in name? |
|
I thought it was a masterful thing to do, to not say "Bush this, Bush that", but instead highlight a more ominous and pervasive influence that goes beyond one man. Carter always referred to the direction America was going in, instead of just pointing the finger at Bush. In two ways, it is much better to do that. For one, it eliminates any possibility of shrill finger-pointing and lack of positivity on your own candidate. Secondly, it also reminds the country that an administration can only do so much, for it is the people who actually carry it out. As bad as Bush's policies may be, it's also the citizens' fault if they allow it, remain silent, and maybe even remain apathetic in November.

1. He did mention that * may not be the one making the |
|
decisions. It may be Cheney, or the whole group around bush.
I thought that was good to point out, too. It did not shift blame from *, but implied that might not be much of a leader.
It was a masterful speech.
