While I'm not for Illinois, Obama was only my second choice in that primary.
I was going for Nancy Skinner.

7. I liked Nancy too. Nothing against Obama, of course. |

I hope she doesn't give up on politics. But maybe she should shoot for a Congressional district instead of the Senate? I think Durbin and Obama are going to be around for quite awhile.

9. I would take her over Durbin but Obama is much needed. |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 09:39 PM by LimpingLib
He is much more progressive than Richardson (yes the "Hispanic" guy with the English surname)and we need a counter to him in 2012.
EDIT: Richardson does say the govenment needs to come clean on Roswell (so yes I love him , have too)but I wasnt impressed with him when he was at the UN at all.

8. BENEFIT #1 to having slayed the DLC beast.....Obama!!!!! |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 09:35 PM by LimpingLib
Granted the DLC still has its once strong pressure print left with little weathering and granted tonight (minus Obama) has been from top to bottom one clown after another speaking (at least the major speakers I saw) , BUT BUT BUT no longer can the DLC shut out progressive from winning every important statewide race at their will.
Obama will win and now with others like Feingold and... .... (thinking of other senate prrogressives.........)..... (thinking)... um........WELL lets go to the House (lol)Peter Defazio and Saunders, we now will have a small bench where we can have a REAL choice in future primarys.
The DLC and Al From can, while staring at my highly placed middle finger flipping their soon to be ash heaped a$$es off , eat their heart out as they see that they cant stop Obama and others get tarred as left wing radicals and destroyed in the primarys like Bonior, Reisch , and others.
Granted, like our environmental policys , it will take time to see the changed policys either clean up or pollute our surroundings (there is a time delayed effect not noticed right away)but the groundwork is finished , the beast is slayed.
Cheers to not letting a bunch of issueless "liberals" (to put it kindly , honestly there was some substance but much of it right leaning) divide the left in the next primary like Dean , Clark , and the Carolina guy did .
The times are a changing!!!

I think that'll give Illinois the best 1-2 punch for senators. Durbin and Obama will make a great team. I'm thinking about moving to Chicago after I get out of college (2 years), and I'd be ecstatic to have those two representing me.

Yes, he was utterly amazing tonight. Very fluid in his words and truly a wizard at putting all the pieces together to make a vivid picture for all to see. My hope that he will lead your nation, the USA, into a wonderful direction.
But what I fear...is that the dark actors may assign him the same fate as the Kennedy brothers and MLK Jr. I pray my fears are wholly unfounded.

15. Not in our (well, my) lifetime. |
|
I'm sorry. I grew up in the south, and live in the Red (Neck) State upper midwest.
Satan Incarnate would have a much better change than a black man getting elected President.
Sad, but an objective reality we all have to face.
Now, getting him into the Senate is another thing. Teddy K didn't need to be president to have a tremendous impact on this nation. Obama needt no either.

he is it! I am absolutely convinced. That man has everything a politician could ask for.
Give him 8-12 years in the Senate and let's go.
Thinking of moving to Illinois just to vote for him....... :-D

:hi:
Yes, a star was born tonight! And it will shine brightly all the way to 2012. I don't think the fact that he is black will make that much difference after he has had fame and a chance to shine for the next 8 years. However by then he will have to compete with John Edwards and Hillery Clinton. Maybe he could be Vice President...watch out Hillery. He could also give Edwards a run for his money.
I think by 2012...race and gender won't be that much of an issue.
Also...if Democrats do well and everything is running smoothly (even if they are not) Democrats could win the election without the bigoted South.

22. I would love to isolate the South |
|
They can go ahead voting in these rightwing nutjobs, but if we can convert a few more states to our side we can have a longterm Democratic Senate and maybe even House and the South wouldn't have a say at all in electing a president.
Sorry to the progressive Southerners, of which there are many, but the rest of the bunch have had way too much power for way too long.

28. Thanks for the link, I just viewed it |
|
He was fantastic! But I noticed something at that site; After I watched it, I was cutting and pasting the transcript for excerpts to put my Dem club newsletter and noticed that several lines were cut out of it. There was a part where he said "I believe we have a righteous wind at our backs...." that sent chills down my spine when I heard it and it's not it the transcript! They also left out a line that said "hope in the face of difficulty and hope in the face of uncertainty.." I hope there's a better transcript out there somewhere. That speech was just too wonderful (and I believe historically significant) to have any parts left out.

20. How moving was his speech? |
|
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 01:02 PM by ArtVandaley
I must say, it floored me. By far one of the very best political speeches I've ever seen. This guy really appears to be the real thing. I doubt he'd run for president anytime soon though. He's only 42, so I'd guess he'll spend at least 2 terms in the Senate before thinking about the national stage. Which would be smart. He's got plenty of time, so take some quality time in the Senate to really learn the ropes about Washington politics. The Dems will be smart enough to get him on all the important committees (like the foreign relations, judiciary, intelligence) so that he is incredibly well versed and experienced. Once Obama has the experience, it would be almost impossible to deny him the presidency. Rarely does such an brilliant yet very human and ethical politician come along. One thing I liked about him is that he really seemed to appreciate America. A lot of politicians and citizens say "America's #1!" because they don't know anything about the rest of the world and often don't care to, therefore making patriotism sound ignorant. Obama has a firm grasp of what this country really can do for people, for he and his family have experienced it. I think that type of respect and appreciation for our country is the type of patriotism this country really needs, not the blind, anti-foreign flag waving that the republicans thrive on. In short, I have high expectations for Obama, and I think he'll probably deliver.

27. 3rd Time I've Heard Obama Speak |
|
The other two times were at county Dem events and each speech was different and equal to the others. This isn't just another guy who can deliver well the lines written by some speech-writer, he actually has thought out his issues and can articulate them. He really does have a bright future. By the way, he has a beautiful, friendly, smart and funny wife, too. That can't hurt a political career.
