no Obama on broadcast network TV, no Arnold - new meme |
|
I thought the broadcast networks were going to show one hour of coverage each night of the convention, then I understood that they wre just going to show the major speech of the night. Now I read on Altercation that none (not counting PBS) of them showed Barak Obama's great KEYNOTE speech Tuesday night. Well on Tuesday night of the GOP convention Arnold Schwarzenegger's is delivering the big primetime speech. What do you think the odds are that the networks will ban Arnold's speech from OUR airwaves?
Let's demand EQUAL coverage. That would be
Monday: Senator McCain's opening speech = the Bill Clinton speech
Tuesday: NO Terminator, no NOTHING
Wednes: Edwards AND Cheney -- no skipping the GOP VP!
Thursday: the Presidential candidates, whether Bush is heavily sedated or not!

3. they need to do equal broadcast |
|
I bet they will put the Terminator and McCain on the same night (opening night) and will put one of the right wing wackos on on the broadcast blackout night so that the true believers turn to cable to watch them on Fox News.
At least Obama was given rave reviews in every paper, so allot of people have gone to CSPAN to watch the speech. Every news station will play clips on the local evening news (I bet the part of Blue America and Red America).
Arnold is barley coherent, McCain is their best speaker....but they will not have anything new and fresh like Obama (who will get tons of press even though people missed him)

4. Actually McCain and Kennedy are similar |
|
in their oratorical skills. While I often disagree with McCain he has more integrity than most Republicans, but he cannot hold a candle to the Clintons or Obama or Edwards when it comes to giving a speech.

6. Are You Inmplying That Ted Kennedy Can't Deliver A Good Speech... |
|
His 1980 speech has been compared to William Jennings Bryan's "Cross Of Gold" speech....

5. The media just hates the conventions period |
|
It's not a liberal/conservative thing. They've always pushed for less and less coverage.

7. More Boring Equals Less Coverage |
|
The networks, including PBS are vying for viewers. As many viewers as they can pack into their broadcast day - and there just aren't enough people who care about the conventions to rake in the advertising/underwriting dollars to make real coverage worthwhile.
The parties (note the plural) have both so heavily managed the conventions in the past few years as to eliminate any real controversy, and in the case of the DNC2004, any suspense at all. Kerry's been the presumptive nominee for months. Speeches are pep-rally bland cheers.
The Democratic party is trying so hard to present a unified, centrist, non-offensive face that I can't imagine anyone who wasn't a shameless wonk wanting to tune in. Hey, Obama's speech was great - carefully crafted and beautifully delivered - but I wasn't exactly siting on the edge of my seat wondering "Oh my, what will he say next?"
To get people to watch, to really get people fired up who aren't knee deep in a sea of Fleet Center balloons - the Dems need to consider firing up the convention. Let see some new policy initiatives broached. Lets hear some new ideas, and see more new faces.

9. Bull crap. The networks want to push the view of their parent corporation. |
|
They see the Democratic Convention as a roadblock against their taxbreaks for the ultra-wealthy and free-trade for those who can afford it and lower wages for most Americans.

I wish we (Democrats) were so powerful as to have the convention be a roadblock, but it's not. It would be an indicator that we were in a much better position if the Republicans really did feel a need to suppress, or respond in force to the convention, or it's message - but other than the "Be scared, you might be attacked!" message coming from DoHS, there's really been little in the way of a response.
And, it's a little difficult to claim that PBS is merely impressing the will of it's corporate masters. Fox on the other hand . . .
